ADJECTIVES

Comparatives are used to show the difference


between two objects.
Toyota
Let’s say that I have two cars. I have a little
Toyota and a big Ford.
A comparative is used to show the difference
between the two.
The Ford is big so we can say “the Ford is Ford

bigger than the Toyota”. Because the Toyota


is small, we can say “The Toyota is smaller
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

Long – Longer Happy – Happier Expensive Good = Better

Bad = Worse
Large – Larger Narrow – Narrower More expensive
Confident Far = Farther/ Further
Gentle - Gentler
Big – Bigger
More confident Many = More
Honest – More honest Popular
Tall - Taller
Little = Less
Famous – More famous More popular
Examples

My house is larger than hers. (One syllable Adjective)

Your dog runs faster than Jim's dog.(One syllable Adjective)

Her handwriting is better than mine. (Irregular Adjective)

Dean is more famous than his brother. (Two syllable Adjective)


COMPARATIVE WITH NOT….AS ….
• We can also use the form not as + adjective + as to compare two things or two
objects.
Example :
I am not as smart as Colin
It has the same meaning as : COLIN IS SMARTER THAN ME
My house is bigger than her house.
(My house is not as small as her house OR Her house is not as big as my house)
MAKE THE COMPARATIVE STRONGER
OR WEAKER
• To make the comparative stronger you can use “far, a lot and much”.
• To make the comparative weaker you can use “ a bit or a little”
Example :
I am 160 cm
My brother is 120 cm
“I am much/ a lot/ far taller than my brother”.
