Exercise 31 – Intercept SUN – Page 132

Q3. On 19th Jan 2008, at about 1530 at ship in DR 40° 16’S 175° 31’E, the sextant
altitude of the Sun’s LL was 43° 27.4’ when the chron (error 02m 12s fast) showed
03h 50m 12s. If HE = 22m and IE = 1.5’ on the arc find the Intercept and the direction
of the LOP.
Step 1 : Obtain the correct date & hours of GMT

Chron 03h 50m 12s 15h 50m 12s

Error (-) 02m 12s (-) 02m 12s
GMT 03h 48m 00s 15h 48m 00s
LIT (E) (+) 11h 42m 04s (+) 11h 42m 04s
LMT 19d 15h 30m 04s 19d 03h 30m 18s

GMT: Jan 19d 03h 48m 00s

Capt. A.K. Sinha TOPIC: 3.3 Position Fixing – Intercept method 1
Step 2 : Obtain the LHA & Dec for the GMT Jan 19d 03h 48m 00s

GHA 19d 03h 222° 23.1’ dec 20° 28.9’ S

Incr 48m 00s 012° 00.0’
GHA for GMT 234° 23.1’ d (-1.0) - 00.4’
Long E (+) 175° 31.0’ Dec 20° 28.5’ S
LHA 409° 54.1
Lat 40° 16.0’ S
LHA = P 049° 54.1’

The cells in Bold font are needed to enter in the formula to calculate the CZD and
later the Az.

Step 3 : Apply Intercept Formula to obtain CZD.
Cos CZD = Cos P . Cos Lat . Cos Dec (+,-) Sin Lat . Sin Dec
Note : If Lat & dec are same name (+), contrary name (-).

Cos CZD = (Cos 49° 54.1’ . Cos 40° 16’ . Cos 20° 28.5’) + (Sin 40° 16’ . Sin 20° 28.5’)
Cos CZD = 0.68652, hence CZD = 46° 38.7’

Step 4 : Correct Sext Alt to obtain TZD. >>> Sext Alt 43° 27.4’
IE (on) (-) 01.5’
Step 5 : Calculate the Intercept.
Thumb Rule : True Greater Away Obs alt 43° 25.9’
Dip (22m) (-) 08.3’
TZD 46° 27.2’ App alt 43° 17.6’
CZD 46° 38.7’ Tot Corn LL (+) 15.2’
Intercept 11.5’ Towards True Alt 43° 32.8’
TZD 46° 27.2’

Step 6 : Calculate the Az thence Step 7 : State your answer
the direction of LOP. with a rough diagram
By Formula or by ABC tables DR Lat 40° 16’N, Long 175° 31’E
Intercept 11.5’(T), Az 279.7° (T)
LOP 009.7° - 189.7°
