FETAL DEVELOPMENT

Pre-embryonic stage
Embroyonic stage
Fetal stage
Developmental stages of pregnancy
a. Pre-embroyonic.
 Fertilization
 Cellular reproduction or division
 Implantation
b.Embroyonic.
• Ectoderm
• Mesoderm
• endoderm
c. Fetal.
Pre-
embroyonic
It begins at fertilization
and lasts through the end
of the second week after
fertilization.

a) Fertilization: sperm
penetrates the egg cell.

b) Cellular division or
reproduction.

c) Implantation.
Pre-
embroyonic

Cellular reproduction.

The zygote begins the

process of mitotic division
called CLEAVAGE.

Cleavage: The zygote

transforms into 2 cell,
then further divides into
4 then each cell divides
into 8 cells and son on.
Each cell contains 46
chromosomes.

Pre-
embroyonic

Implantation: The
blastocyst is
completely buried in
the uterine lining on
the 10th day.
Embroyonic
Stage

The developing conceptus

is called EMBRYO.

During this stage, the

cells multiply and tissues
begin to assume specific
functions, a process
called
DIFFERENTIATION. It
is during differentiation
that tissues form organs
and organ system.
Embroyonic
Stage

3rd week: 3 germ

layers develop in the
embryo.

a. Ectoderm.
b. Mesoderm.
c. Endoderm.
Ectoderm, Mesoderm, Endoderm
Germ layer Structure formation

Skin, nervous system, nasal passages, crystalline lens of

Ectoderm the eye, pharynx, mammary glands, salivary glands.

Muscles, circulatory system, bones, reproductive system,

Mesoderm connective tissue, kidneys, ureters.

Alimentary tract, respiratory tract, bladder, pancreas,

Endoderm liver.
FETAL STAGE
◦ It is from the beginning of the 9th week after fertilization and
continues at birth.
◦ The developing human is called FETUS.
◦ There is additional growth and maturation of the organs and body
systems.

Ectopic
pregnancy

It occurs when the

zygote is implanted
outside the uterus.
Multifetal
pregnancy

Monozygotic: It
derived from 1
zygote (one egg and
1 sperm divided into
2 zygotes). They
share same genetic
material, thus, there
sex is always the
same.

pregnancy

Dizygotic or fraternal:
May or may not of the same
gender and their genetic
material is not identical.
