COVID-19

TESTING

BY: DANIELLE ALI

OBJECTIVES
At the end of this teaching and demonstration the patient will
be able to:
1. Define Covid-19 Virus
2. Explain the significance of being tested for the Covid-19
Virus.
3. Identify the symptoms that suggest you may be exposed to
the virus.
4. What are some precautions that can help prevent the
spread of COVID-19?
5. Outline the testing procedure.
01
Define COVID-19
Virus
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a viral
infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
The coronavirus surfaced in December 2019
and has produced a respiratory epidemic.
COVID-19 may be fatal since it spreads from
person to person, and it has caused millions
of fatalities worldwide as well as long-term
health issues in those who have survived the
sickness (John Hopkins Medicine, 2021).
02
Explain the
significance of
being tested for
the COVID-19
Virus.
Explain the significance of being tested
for the COVID-19 Virus.

Testing is critical in our efforts to limit

and manage the COVID-19 pandemic
by identifying sick persons and
preventing additional COVID-19
person-to-person spreading to your
family and others in your community.
03Identify the
symptoms that
suggest you may be
exposed to the virus.
Based on mild to moderate circumstances, the doctor will identify symptoms that
indicate you may have been exposed to the virus, such as:

Fever Loss of taste or smell Body aches

Shaking chills Sore throat Joint pain

Difficulty breathing or
Cough Muscle pain
Shortness of breath

Fatigue Headaches

Diarrhea Nausea or vomiting

(WHO, 2021)

precautions that can
help prevent the spread
of Covid-19?
What are some precautions that can help
prevent the spread of Covid-19?
The virus spreads mostly through close contact; normally,
a person becomes infected when aerosols or droplets
containing the virus are inhaled or come into direct
contact with the nose, or mouth, (WHO, 2021). To prevent
the spread, some precautions were implemented to the
public such as:
• Social distancing measures (At least 1 metre apart)
• Wear a properly fitted mask
• Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or sanitize.
• Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
• Get vaccinated when a vaccine is available to you.
• If you feel unwell, stay home and self-quarantine until
you recover.
• Etc.

procedure.
TYPES OF TESTS

Viral testing, often known as diagnostic tests, can

determine whether you have SARS-CoV-2, the virus
that causes COVID-19. Diagnostic tests are classified
into two types: molecular and antigen (CDC, 2021).
WHO SHOULD GET TESTED?
• People who have symptoms of COVID-19.
• People who have come into close contact with someone with COVID-
19 should be tested to check for infection
• Unvaccinated people who have taken part in activities that put them
at higher risk for COVID-19 because they cannot physically distance
as needed to avoid exposure, such as travel, attending large social or
mass gatherings, or being in crowded or poorly-ventilated indoor
settings.
• If you are traveling overseas.
• People who have been asked or referred to get tested by their
healthcare provider (CDC,2021).
HOW YOU SHOULD GET TESTED?

Contact your health provider, or visit your

community health center or the nearest hospital
in your district.
How to Collect a Nasal Mid-Turbinate
Specimen for COVID-19 Testing
Use only an authorized specimen collection kit. Get a kit from your healthcare provider or a testing center. Kits are available at a
pharmacy or other retail outlet. Follow the instructions included with the specimen collection kit. Use only materials provided in the kit
to collect and store or mail the specimen unless the kit says to do otherwise. Use these instructions with kits that specify a nasal mid-
turbinate swab collection.
