The Skin We Speak - Synopsis
The Skin We Speak is a book written by Dr. Lisa Delpit that explores the impact of
language and culture on education. The book argues that language is not just a
tool for communication, but it is also a way of expressing one's identity, culture,
and worldview. Dr. Delpit believes that educators must recognize the importance
of language and culture in the classroom and create a learning environment that
is inclusive of all students, regardless of their background.

Dr. Delpit argues that educators must be aware of the cultural and linguistic
differences among their students and use this knowledge to create a learning
environment that is welcoming and inclusive. This includes using culturally
relevant materials, incorporating students' languages and cultures into the
curriculum, and being mindful of the ways in which language can be used as a
tool of power and oppression.

Connections
The Skin We Speak is particularly relevant to multicultural education because it highlights
the need for educators to be aware of the cultural and linguistic diversity of their students.
In a multicultural classroom, students come from different backgrounds, speak different
languages, and have different ways of understanding the world. This can lead to
misunderstandings and miscommunications if educators are not sensitive to these
differences.

In short, The Skin We Speak is an important book for educators who are interested in
creating a more inclusive and multicultural learning environment. By recognizing the
importance of language and culture in the classroom, educators can create a learning
environment that is more welcoming and supportive for all students
