*THE HUMAN

REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM*
(FEMALE)
The reproductive systems in
both the male and female
consist of primary and
secondary sex organs and
sex glands.
The primary function of the
reproductive systems is to
perpetuate the species
through sexual or germ cell
fertilization and reproduction.
MORPHOLOGY
refers to the size, shape
and structure of a
given organ.
PHYSIOLOGY is the study of
how living organisms
function, including such
processes as nutrition,
movement, and reproduction.
The role of the male
reproductive system
is to produce and
transport of

is to produce
egg cells
and for child bearing
OVARIES –
almond-shaped
organs. They are
located on each
side of the body,
a few inches
below the waist.
OVARIES –
They secrete
hormones called
estrogen and
progesterone to
produce mature
egg cells.
OVARIES –
The eggs begin
to mature when
the female
reaches puberty.
OVARIES – During
puberty, the ovaries
usually produce and
release one ripened
egg every 28 days.
This process is
called
OVULATION.
FALLOPIAN
TUBES– two
very fine tubes
that extend from
each ovary into
the uterus.
UTERUS or
WOMB –
hollow,
muscular, pear-
shaped organ
located between
the two ovaries.
UTERUS or
WOMB – It is
here that a
fertilized egg
will develop and
grow into a baby.
UTERUS or
WOMB –
However, if the
egg remains
unfertilized, the
uterus sheds, then
leave the body as
menstrual
discharge.
CERVIX – A
narrow structure
within an inch-long
canal connecting
the lower end of
the uterus to the
upper portion of
the vagina.
VAGINA or BIRTH

hollow tube that
leading from the
cervix to the outside
of the body. The wall

allows it to expand
during childbirth and
sexual intercourse.

The largest cell

body is the egg.
A woman never runs
out of eggs. At birth
she has between 1
and 2 million
potential eggs and by
puberty has 300,000
to 400,000 viable
eggs that can be
fertilized.
The average lifespan of
an egg once it is
released from the ovary
is 12-24 hours after
which it either
disintegrates or is
flushed out of the body
with the menstrual flow.
The average life span
of the sperm is 2-3 days.
The average
woman is ready
to give birth
when fully
dilated at 10 cm.
Some women
cannot dilate past
4 cm so the have
to get a caesarean
section.
Some women can
open up to about
25 cm, which
makes for a very
fast labor, but
this is not very
common.
