Belief and

Environmental
Awareness
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
The phrase refers to being mindful of the natural
environment and making decisions that benefit rather than
harm the ecosystem. Environmental awareness has grown in
popularity in recent years. It's fair to say that environmental
consciousness has become somewhat of a fad: from
environmentally friendly tiny homes to organic food, it's a hot
topic. However, it is not a new concept, and because of its
significance, it should be more than a passing trend. Let's
delve a little more into environmental consciousness.
Instead of using disposable plastic water bottles, this
could entail investing in a glass or ceramic water bottle.
Plastic takes an extraordinarily long time to degrade,
and a large portion of it ends up in the oceans, where it
kills plant and animal life. Using an all-natural hair-care
product rather than a can of hazardous aerosol spray
could be another way to be green.

Rising temperatures and unsustainable farming practices has

resulted in the increasing threat of water and food insecurity.
Globally, more than 68 billion tonnes of top-soil is eroded
every year at a rate 100 times faster than it can naturally be
replenished. Laden with biocides and fertiliser, the soil ends
up in waterways where it contaminates drinking water and
protected areas downstream.
Conserving Energy and
Water
Conserving energy, which goes along with the house
concept, is another method to display environmental
consciousness.
Turning off lights while not in use is a simple way to save
energy. Some people even go so far as to install solar panels
and other forms of alternative energy. Solar power has a lot
of potential to become widespread and efficient in the
future.
Water conservation goes hand in hand with
Purchases, Recycling, and
Activism
Some people prefer natural fabrics and materials to
synthetic fibers and materials when purchasing apparel and
products.
Recycling is, of course, an important aspect of exhibiting
environmental consciousness. Others become activists
because they are particularly passionate about the issue.

Environmental beliefs are ideas about the
relationship between humans and the environment.

The structure of environmental beliefs and worldviews that advance the
theory that promotes the transition to sustainability. From the perspective
of diversity and cultural transformation, the cultural differences and
gender perspectives in sustainable environmental beliefs. The influence
of environmental belief systems on sustainable behaviors is the focus of
this analysis. Focus should be on practices and contexts that cause a
relevant ecological impact, such as certain specific domains of
consumption.
Urban environments and work organizations should be considered as
well as individuals in terms of commitment and corporate responsibility.
Four human values are considered
to underlie individuals’
environmental beliefs and
behaviors:
· biospheric (i.e., concern for environment): self-transcendence
· altruistic (i.e., concern for others): self-transcendence
· egoistic (i.e., concern for personal resources): self-enhancement
· hedonic (i.e., concern for pleasure and comfort): self-
enhancement
Pro-environmental beliefs, attitudes, identities, and behaviors –
such as energy saving behaviors, recycling and acceptability of
environmental policies – proved to particularly relate to values
belonging to the self-transcendence and self-enhancement
dimension. Self-transcendence values make individuals focus on
the interests of others and the environment and are typically
positively related to pro-environmental beliefs and behaviors.
Con versely, self-enhancement values make individuals focus on
self-interests and are generally negatively related to pro-
environmental beliefs and behaviors.
Self-transcendence values:

·Biospheric values reflect a concern for the environment in itself, without a clear link to
human beings. Accordingly, acting pro-environmentally would directly support this value and
biospheric values are indeed, when compared to other values, most strongly and consistently
related to pro-environmental beliefs and behaviors.
·Altruistic values reflect a concern for the welfare and fair treatment of other human
beings. As pro-environmental beliefs and behaviors oftentimes relate to positive outcomes
for human beings (e.g., health benefits) or are seen as a requirement to preserve our planet
for future generations, altruistic values are typically also positively related to pro-
environmental beliefs and behaviors when such behaviors also benefit other people.
Self-enhancement values:

· Egoistic values reflect a focus on the

costs and benefits a choice has on
someone’s resources, and on power or
achievement.
· Hedonic values focus on attaining
pleasure, positive feelings and reducing effort.
Environmental Conditions
Conditions
The factors that influence how individuals
live or work, particularly in terms of their
safety and well-being. The state of
something in terms of appearance,
quality, or functionality.
The climate crisis is accelerating at an unprecedented rate,
and we are not ready for it. While the crisis has many
factors that play a role in its exacerbation, there are some
that warrant more attention than others. Here are some
of the biggest environmental problems of our lifetime.
POOR GOVERNANCE
Economists and environmentalists have urged
policymakers for years to increase the price of
activities that emit greenhouse gases (one of our
biggest environmental problems), the lack of which
constitutes the largest market failure, for example
through carbon taxes, which will stimulate
innovations in low-carbon technologies.

A third of the food intended for human consumption-
around 1.3 billion tons- is wasted or lost. This is
enough to feed 3 billion people. Food waste and loss
accounts for 4.4 gigatons of greenhouse gas
emissions annually; if it was a country, food waste
would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse
gases, behind China and the US.

A recent WWF report found that the population sizes of
mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians have
experienced a decline of an average of 68% between 1970
and 2016. The report attributes this biodiversity loss to a
variety of factors, but mainly land-use change, particularly
the conversion of habitats, like forests, grasslands and
mangroves, into agricultural systems. Animals such as
pangolins, sharks and seahorses are significantly affected
by the illegal wildlife trade, and pangolins are critically
endangered because of it.
PLASTIC POLLUTION
A report by science journal, Nature, determined that
currently, roughly 11 million tons of plastic make its way
into the oceans every year, harming wildlife habitats and
the animals that live in them. The research found that if
no action is taken, the plastic crisis will grow to 29 million
metric tons per year by 2040. If we include microplastics
into this, the cumulative amount of plastic in the ocean
could reach 600 million tons by 2040.

Agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, another
one of the biggest environmental problems appearing on
this list. Land is cleared to raise livestock or to plant other
crops that are sold, such as sugar cane and palm oil.
Besides for carbon sequestration, forests help to prevent
soil erosion, because the tree roots bind the soil and
prevent it from washing away, which also prevents
landslides.
AIR POLLUTION
Research from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows
that an estimated 4.2 to 7 million people die from air pollution
worldwide every year and that nine out of 10 people breathe
air that contains high levels of pollutants. In Africa, 258 000
people died as a result of outdoor air pollution in 2017, up
from 164 000 in 1990, according to UNICEF. Causes of air
pollution mostly comes from industrial sources and motor
vehicles, as well as emissions from burning biomass and poor
air quality due to dust storms.

Studies have shown that the global food system is responsible
for up to one third of all human-caused greenhouse gas
emissions, of which 30% comes from livestock and fisheries.
Crop production releases greenhouse gases such as nitrous
oxide through the use of fertilisers.
60% of the world’s agricultural area is dedicated to cattle
ranching, although it only makes up 24% of global meat
consumption.
CONCLUSION
Humans have a responsibility to protect the environment in which
they live. Cultural differences may be useful in assisting one another
in promoting and sustaining environmental improvement for future
generations. The outcomes of today's actions will be reflected in the
future. Humans must be responsible in caring for and maintaining
their environment. There are numerous programs and activities
aimed at boosting environmental health. Understanding the fragility
of our environment and the significance of protecting it is what
environmental awareness is all about. Everyone's collaboration is
quite beneficial in this situation.
