• They emphasized the importance of scientific
methods of investigation to provide
satisfactory answers in understanding the self.
• It emphasizes individualistic rather than
relational.

• Self-sufficiency – implies confidence

• Self being rational – everything is logic and


reason

• Self-efficacy - everything can be explained by

• Primarily viewed as collectivistic and is
grounded on nature.

• Focus on spirituality and philosophy

EASTERN THOUGHT
• In Confucian system:
 Self is a person within the society who exhibits
refinement and compassion.

• Principle of Confucius: junzi, li, and ren

• Junzi – virtuous person

• Li – spiritual rituals and sacrifices

• Ren/jen – compassionate

• In Hinduism system:
 Law of Karma
 Believe in “Atman” meaning being an immortal
soul continue to be reincarnated from lifetime to
lifetime.
