FORMATION OF
PRECIPITATION
May Ulan because?
WHAT IS
PRECIPITATION
Any liquid or frozen water that forms in atmosphere and
falls back to the earth. I comes in many forms, like rains,
sleet, and snow.
CLOU
DS

Precipitation forms in the clouds when water

vapor condenses into bigger and bigger
droplets of water

3 Ways to Form

 CYCLONIC
 OROGRAPHIC
CONVECTI

DIFFERENT TYPES
OF PRECIPITATION
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRECIPITATION

RAIN SNOW SLEET HAIL

FREEZING RAIN Drizzle

RAIN
It is a type of precipitation that
falls as water droplets over the
ground.

Classification
• Light rainfall
• Moderate rainfall
• Heavy rainfall
SNOW
Snow precipitation is when the clouds
release snow crystals to the ground.

Snowfall is a kind of precipitation

common in colder and polar regions.
SLEET
It forms when the raindrops pass
through the air at subfreezing
temperatures.
HAIL
Precipitation in the form of small balls
or other pieces of ice falling separately
or frozen together in irregular lumps
FREEZING
RAIN
Freezing rain happens when rain falls
during below freezing
conditions/temperatures. This normally
results in the solidification of rain
droplets.
DRIZZLE
Drizzle is a light precipitation
consisting of liquid water drops smaller
than those of rain. It is stronger than
mist but less than a shower.

CHARACTERISTICS
RAINFALL CHARACTERISTICS

AMOUNT INTENSITY DURATION

FREQUENCY SEASONAL
DISTRIBUTION
RAINFALL
Rainfall is a measurement of how much water
falls as rain in a certain period of time.

Rainfall is measured by collecting rain water

across different areas and times, as the amounts
may differ between locations and times.
AMOUNT
Rainfall amount is described as the depth of water
reaching the ground, typically in inches or
millimeters.
INTENSITY
Rainfall intensity is defined as the ratio of the total
amount of rain (rainfall depth) falling during a given
period to the duration of the period It is expressed in
depth units per unit time, usually as mm per hour
(mm/h).
DURATION
The duration refers to the length of time rainfall occurs. A
high intensity rainfall for a short duration may affect
tender seedlings, but it will not likely have much effect on
soil erosion and runoff. Rainfall of longer duration can
significantly affect infiltration, runoff, and soil erosion
processes.
FREQUENCY
Rainfall Frequency means the probability of a rainfall
event of defined characteristics occurring in any given
year. Information on rainfall frequency is published by
the National Weather Service. For the purpose of storm
drainage design.
SEASONAL
DISTRIBUTION
Seasonal Distribution it means that the tendency for a
place to have more rainfall in certain months or
seasons than in others.
