What can you say about the picture
below?
Lesson opener
Teacher Sheena Mae organized a speed competition in
multiplication of whole number in her class. After some round,
the following students emerged as top scorers. The last basis as
to who wins first, second and third places is time spent.

Problem

Mr. Carl Cabatac went for a road trip. He left

malinao, aklan at 9:45 a.m. and arrived Iloilo
city at 3:18 p.m. How long was his trip?
Lesson opener

Aikie drives his car at a constant speed of

75 kph. How far will he be from his
starting point after 3.5 hours?
• What is Distance?
Distance is the length measured between two points or the
length of space travelled by a moving object.
Formula in solving distance is d=speed×time.
• What is Time?
Time is the measured or measurable period during which a
condition, process or action exist or takes place.
Formula in solving time is t=distance÷speed
• What is Speed?
Speed at which an object or person travels.
Formula in solving speed is s=distance÷time
Aikie drives his car at a constant speed of 75 kph. How
far will he be from his starting point after 3.5 hours?
Given:
s=75kph
t=3.5h
d=s×t
=75×3.5
=262.5km
Problem

Rhyne travels at a speed of 60kph. At the

same rate, how long will it take him to
cover a 240 km distance?
Lesson Opener

I used a thread to make a triangle with equal

sides of 2cm. After that I folded the same thread
and turned the shape into a square. How many
millimeters is the side length of the square?
The lesson opener is an example of a
problem on perimeter. A Perimeter is the
distance around a figure. It is computed by
adding the length sides of a polygon.
In general, the formula for perimeter is:
Perimeter(P)=side1+side2+side3…+sideN
14mm 18mm

6mm

P=s1+s2+s3
=12+18+6
=38mm
I used a thread to make a triangle with equal sides of 2cm.
After that I folded the same thread and turned the shape into a
square. How many millimeters is the side length of the square?

P=3s
=3(20)
=60mm
Perimeter of the triangle= perimeter of square=60mm
4s=60
s= 60/4 or 15mm
Lesson Opener
I used a thread to make a triangle with
equal sides of 56m. After that I folded the
same thread and turned the shape into a
square. How many millimeters is the side
length of the square?
• The ratio between the circumference and the
diameter of a circle is called pi, a Greek letter
whose symbol is . The value of pi is always 22/7
or 3.14… as we have discussed earlier, its value
is constant. It means that regardless of the size
of the circle, the ratio between the
circumference and the diameter is the same.
Using pi as a ratio, we can now derive the
formula for circumference and diameter. If =c/d,
then c=d and d=c/.
Given: d=56m
Unknown: circumference (times 5)
Solution: c= πd
=22/7×56
=176m
=176×5
=880m
Lesson Opener
•We have a rectangle with side length of
6cm and 4cm and a square with a
perimeter that is equal to the perimeter of
the rectangle. By how many sq. cm is the
area of a rectangle smaller than the area of
the square?
Formula
Area of rectangle=length×width
Area of square= side×side
Area of parallelograms=base×height
Area of tringle=1/2×(base×height)
Area of trapezoids=1/2×(base1+base2)×height
Area of circles=πr×r
P=2(l+w) Area of square=
=2(6+4) =
=20 =25
perimeter of Area of rectangle=l×w
square=perimeter of =6×4
rectangle=20
=24
Perimeter of square=4s
25-24=1
4s=20
S=20/4
S=5
Lesson Opener

A close sewing box, 28cm by 20 cm by

6cm, is to be completely covered. What
area is to be covered?
The surface area of a solid object is a measure of
the total area that the surface of the object
occupies. So, the first step to do in the study of
surface area is to visualize a three-dimensional
idea in a two-dimensional drawing. To get there,
you need to see surface area in the 3-D realm
and then transfer everything to paper. It might be
a bit difficult at first, but with a lot of practice it
will surely become easier eventually.
Another way to make the study of surface area more
concrete is to visualize or draw the net of the solid figures.
Let’s have some examples.
Formula
SA of cube=6
SA of Rectangular Prism=2lh+2wh+2lw
SA of Square pyramid=+4(1/2bh)
SA of Cylinder=
SA of Cone=
SA of Sphere=
A close sewing box, 28cm by 20 cm by 6cm, is to
be completely covered. What area is to be covered?
Solution:
SA=2lh+2wh+2lw or 2(lh+wh+lw)
=2(28×6+20×6+28×20)
=2(168+120+560)
=2(848)
=1696
Lesson Opener

How many cubes of side 2cm can be made

from a block of wood 28cm bye 20cm by
14cm?
• What is Volume?
Volume is the amount of space occupied by a
three-dimensional object.
•Formula of volume:
Rectangular Prism=lwh
Cube=
Cylinder=
Cone=1/3
How many cubes of side 2cm can be made from
a block of wood 28cm bye 20cm by 14cm?
=28×20×14

=14 ×10 ×7
=980
