Tips for Speaking

CODI.UFRO.CL
The speaking part of the test has three sections:

• Personal information
• Picture description
• Simulated situation
Personal information
You will be asked about different aspects of your life, like:

• What is your name? What is your last name? (Spell both of them)
• How old are you?
• Where do you live? Who do you live with?
• What do you do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies?
• Do you practice any sports? Which one? Talk about it.
• What do you usually do during the weekend? (Routine - Present simple)
• What did you do the last weekend/yesteday/before clases, etc.? (Past simple)
• What are you going to do tomorrow/after classes/ this weekend, etc.?
Picture Description
Step 1: Give a general introduction, state the place you can see.
• 'This picture shows …’
• 'In this picture I can see...’
• 'This is a picture of …'

• This picture shows a house, specifically a kitchen.

Step 2: Say who are in the picture.
• “There is…”
• “There are…”

There is a family. I can see the mother, the father, and the daughter

Step 3: Say “where” in the picture.

• They are in the middle of the picture, in front of a table. The father is on the right. The daughter is on the left. And the
mother is between them.

• They are wearing informal clothes. The girl is in pink, the mother in
light blue and the father is wearing a grey sweater.
• I think they are preparing the ingredients for “tacos”. They might have
a Mexican feast!

Simulated Situation

In this part, you will have to talk about a situation presented by your teacher. You should be able to
• give your opinion
• make suggestions
• respond to suggestions
• discuss alternatives
• make recommendations
• negotiate agreement with your partner.
