founded as Arbaminch Water Technology Institute (AWIT)

VoIP implementation using asterisk platform
Introduction
VoIP is the transmission of voice and multimedia content over
an internet connection
Allows users to make voice calls from a computer, smart
phone, other mobile devices
Uses an internet connection instead of a telephone company's
wiring
Problem statement
The following are drawbacks of the circuit switched system.
Scalability is limited
Call charges are higher than VoIP
Maintenance fees need to be paid
Time delay
Since dedicated channels are used, the bandwidth required is
more.

General Objective
Setup a VoIP server by using Asterisk open source which is
implemented on a LAN to make more use of the internet line
Specific Objective
Lower cost and higher flexibility.
Provide communication inside an organization by using broadband
connection.
Making more use of the internet line rather than its usage for surfing and
chatting.
Eliminate the use of wires and cost related with maintaining the wire.
Scope
It is mainly concerned with utilizing the resources to the
optimum by using the internet
Reducing cost on office telephones since this technology
enables desktops and computer to act as telephones
Methodology
First we need to install asterisk server on ubuntu operating
system.
Asterisk has many configuration files which are used for
different purpose.
Among these SIP, extension and voicemail files are used for
developing VoIP.
