    Dagim Teshome completed an internship at Arbaminch University ICT Center where he helped implement a VoIP system using Asterisk. He learned about virtualization, networking fundamentals, and configuring switches. Some challenges included communication issues and limited materials. To overcome these, Dagim did self-study and worked with other students. Overall, Dagim improved his practical and theoretical skills. For his project, Dagim set up an Asterisk server on a LAN to enable lower-cost internal calls utilizing the existing internet connection. He configured SIP, extensions, and voicemail to enable calling between softphones and mobile apps. Testing showed successful call initiation and termination over the VoIP system.

    Historical overview
    • ArbaMinch University is based in South-West Ethiopia. Initially
    founded as Arbaminch Water Technology Institute (AWIT)

    • Consists of two institute ,five colleges and three school which


    are situated across six campuses

    • ICTC is present at the main campus under Institute of


    technology. manages the wired and wireless network
    infrastructure, campus computer classrooms and facilities, and

    Title
    VoIP implementation using asterisk platform
    Introduction
     VoIP is the transmission of voice and multimedia content over
    an internet connection
     Allows users to make voice calls from a computer, smart
    phone, other mobile devices
     Uses an internet connection instead of a telephone company's
    wiring
    Problem statement
    The following are drawbacks of the circuit switched system.
     Scalability is limited
     Call charges are higher than VoIP
     Maintenance fees need to be paid
     Time delay
     Since dedicated channels are used, the bandwidth required is
    more.

     General Objective
    Setup a VoIP server by using Asterisk open source which is
    implemented on a LAN to make more use of the internet line

     Specific Objective
     Lower cost and higher flexibility.
     Provide communication inside an organization by using broadband
    connection.
     Making more use of the internet line rather than its usage for surfing and
    chatting.
     Eliminate the use of wires and cost related with maintaining the wire.
    Scope
     It is mainly concerned with utilizing the resources to the
    optimum by using the internet
     Reducing cost on office telephones since this technology
    enables desktops and computer to act as telephones
    Methodology
     First we need to install asterisk server on ubuntu operating
    system.
     Asterisk has many configuration files which are used for
    different purpose.
     Among these SIP, extension and voicemail files are used for
    developing VoIP.

    Oracle VM Virtual-box:is ideal for testing, developing


    demonstrating, and deploying solutions across multiple platforms
    from one machine

    Ubuntu: is a Linux-based OS. It is designed for computers, smart


    phones, and network servers.

    Asterisk server: is an open-source software platform. With


    asterisk any computer can become communication server

    Microsip: is a portal SIP soft phone, it facilitates high quality VoIP


    calls based on the open sip protocol

    Mizudroid:is a VoIP soft phone for android mobile phone, based


    on the sip protocol standard, allowing users to connect to a VoIP
    server

    Conclusion
    VoIP is found to be a great help in modernizing work area
    communication system and connecting companies with their
    branch offices in different place of the world and other global
    companies.
    The concept of VoIP technology is not widely known in Ethiopia
    even though its importance is significant, this project makes it
    possible to establish an IP telephony system with the use of an
    open source on the VoIP server using asterisk.
    Recommendation

    We suggest that companies use VoIP for internal


    communication among employees. VoIP can also be used
    outside the work and organization arena for daily
    communication between friends and families by any user with
    further development on VoIP technology
