What was it?
The Industrial Revolution was a period of major changes
over 200 years ago (began in the UK in the early 1800’s).

In earlier days, people made products by hand and


mostly worked in their homes or small workshops.

During the industrial revolution, many factories were


built.

Laborers began making large numbers of things using


machines powered by engines.

The Industrial Revolution in Leeds
During the 19th Century Leeds changed from a small town to a large manufacturing city.

By 1801, the population had reached 30,000 (a large town).

By 1851, it had reached 101,000.

Lots of new houses were built HOWEVER the standard of housing was poor and they became
dirty and crowded.

As a result, diseases spread more easily.


The Industrial Revolution in Leeds -
Canals
•In 1700 the rivers Aire and Calder were
made navigable from Leeds to
Wakefield.
•In 1794 work began on the Leeds to
Liverpool canal.
•It was completed in 1816.
•Canals were built to allow heavy goods
to be moved easily where they were
needed.
