ADRENAL TUMORS

DEFINITION
• Adrenal tumors are cancerous/ non cancerous growth of the
adrenal glands.
• A tumor begins when healthy cells change and grow out of
control forming a mass.
INCIDENCE
• According to American Cancer Society the incidence is about
200 per year.
• Average age of affected is 46 years.
• The survival rate is 50%
RISK FACTORS

Hereditary factors like:


a) Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2)
b) Li-Fraumeni syndrome
c) Von Hippel Lindau syndrome
d) Neurofibromatosis
e) Succinate dehydrogenase mutations
Family history
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Due to risk factors

Expression of h19 gene is reduced

Gene mutations occurs

Unhealthy uncontrolled growth of adrenal cells occur

Develops into functioning/ non functioning tumors and signs and symptoms
occurs.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
STAGES OF ADRENAL CANCER

• TNM staging system is used.


T- Tumor(how large)?
N- Nodal involvement?
M- Has the cancer spread to other body parts?
TUMOR
T x – Primary tumor cannot be evaluated
T0- No primary tumor
T1- < 5 cm
T2 - > 5cm
T3 – any size, grown into area around adrenal gland
T4 – has grown into nearby organs
NODE
N x – Regional lymph nodes cannot be evaluated
N0 – Cancer has not spread into lymph nodes
N1 – cancer has spread into lymph nodes
METASTASIS
M0 – Cancer has not spread to other parts of body
M1 – Cancer has spread to other parts of body
COMPLICATIONS
Side effects of chemotherapy which includes hair loss, risk for
infection, fatigue, vomiting.
Radiation causes fatigue, nausea, skin reactions.
