Structural Health Monitoring
RV College of
Engineering Go, Change the World

 SHM is an active damage detection technique used in aerospace, civil and

mechanical structural systems.
 It involves the observation and analysis of a system over time using periodically
sampled response measurements to monitor changes to the material and
geometric properties of engineering structures such as bridges and buildings.

 Motives of SHM :

 Allows an optimum use of structure

 Avoidance of catastrophic failures
 Reduced maintenance services and costs

Fibre Optic Sensors
RV College of

Fibre Optic Sensors :

 It is a sensing device for
measurement of physical
quantities using optical fibre
as sensing element.
 Respond to parameters such
as strain, temperature,
pressure, vibrations,etc.

 Mechanism: It modulates the light through the optical fibres with

a certain parameter and transmit the modulated light back to a
monitoring point.
Advantages of FOS
RV College of
Engineering Go, Change the World

 Offer the capability of remote monitoring in real-time for analyzing the structural integrity of
critical components using embedded devices.
 Operational at higher temperatures than most conventional piezoelectric ceramic sensors,
which have a maximum operational temperature of 423K
 Unaffected by electromagnetic interference. Hence, the integration of FOS into environments
where electromagnetic radiation is present is of no concern.
 A typical p1iezoelectric sensor has higher dimensions of length hence embedding them is
impossible, whereas FOS are lightweight, with a small diameter (~250 um) to enable them to
be embedded into composite structures. They can also be multiplexed so as to accommodate
multiple sensors simultaneously.

Sensor Monitoring Methods & Techniques

Fused Tapered Merging of two optical fibres via etching, polishing or fibre fusion. An AE stress
Coupler wave interacts with the fibres causing a change in the effective strain field, thus
altering the coupling ratio output of the two fibers.
Mach-Zehnder A beam splitter separates incoming light into two components to a sensing and
Interferometer reference fibre. The sensing fibre is usually coated with a material that is sensitive
to the parameter of interest. The phase of the light propagating through the sensing
fibre alters with the influence of an external parameter.

Michelson Like the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, a beam splitter separates incoming light
Interferometer into two components. The sensitivity of the interferometer can be dependent on
the length of the exposed fibre.
Fabry-Perot Insertion of two cleaved fibres into a capillary housing. Analysis of the transmitted
Interferometer and reflected waves between the two fibre-ends creates a multiple peak
wavelength trace on an optical spectrum analyser .
Fibre Bragg Manufactured by inscribing a grating into the fibre core with a high-powered UV
Grating laser. The reflection of a low-power laser captured by an optical spectrum analyser
determines the wavelength peak from the grating.
Conclusion
RV College of
Engineering Go, Change the World

 The research and development, and application trends of fibre

optic sensors for structural health monitoring over the past few
decades, have been reviewed.

 There has been significantly more research effort spent on FBG AE

sensing over interferometric sensing methods due to their simplicity
and advantages of multiplexing since wavelength multiplexing is
easier to implement than time-domain multiplexing.

 Multi-measurand AE sensors with AE capability are likely to increase

the interest of the industry in using such sensors over state of the
art piezoelectric AE sensors in complex operational environments.

Upon completion of project we would  learn various concepts of course:

• Creating a website with multiple features requires heavy knowledge on Web

Development course.

• Throughout the project we will encounter various stages of it and learn successfully.
• The user credentials and real time data needs to be stored and monitored ,hence
Database management System comes into play.

• The knowledge of various hardware appliances ,devices , microcontrollers , their

working principles ,efficiency , working range.

• A very good method of water distribution system which aims towards sustainable
environment and reduces water wastage to a large extent.

• Will definitely motivate to take up larger day to problems and find sustainable solutions
for them  using the technical knowledge.
