    Operation Barbarossa began on June 22, 1941, when more than 3 million German and Axis troops invaded the Soviet Union along an 1,800 mile front. The invasion caught the Soviets unprepared as Stalin had refused to believe that Hitler would break their non-aggression pact. The German forces advanced toward Leningrad, Moscow, and Ukraine in the north, center, and south of the country respectively. The early success of German panzer divisions gave them an advantage against Soviet troops.

    • USSR prisioners were killed inmediatly upon capture.
