• Mussolini’s faiures Hitler into North Africa, and the balkans.


• African Korps soldiers Were sent to Tripoli from where the british were driven out of
Libya.

Meanwhile, Hitler’s trops overran Yugoslavia and greece

Crete was taken after airbone attack. (may) (British evacuated in


1941).

• British tropos were move to fight Greece (which weakened them) (Britain needed strength)
• Hitler’s plan to attack USSR was deleayed (by 6 weeks)
Operation Barbarossa
(German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact)

• Germany signed a pact with USSR. (August 1939)

• Not to take military action against each other for a period of 10 years.

• This pact surprised the world and dismayed France and Britain, who had signed their
own agreement with Hitler. Violated when german troops invaded Czechoslovakia
(same year)
Operation Barbarossa

• September 3, 1939 two days after nazi forces invaded poland


• France and Britain declared war on Germany.
• France defeated – Hitler turned toward his ultimate goal,
Germanys expansion to the east and the lebensraum.
• Defeat of the USSR and the colonization of its territories
• Condenamed operation barbarossa the invasion called for german
tropos to advance along line running the port of archangel to the port of
Astrakhan, on the volgan river.
Operation Barbarossa begins
(June 1941)

• More tan 3 million german and axis tropos invaded USSR along an 1,800 mile-long
• Stalin refused to believe that Hitler was planning an attack so it caught them
unprepared.
• With the attack toward leningrad (north), Moscow (center),
Ukraine (south) German panzer helped Germany to gainan early advantage against
the USSR tropos.
• Comissar order authorized the inmadite execution of all captured enemy officiers
• USSR prisioners were killed inmediatly upon capture.
