PYTHAGORAS THEOREM

Pythagoras Theorem Proof:
Given: Δ ABC is a right angled triangle where m(<B) = 900
And AB = P, BC= b and AC = h

Pythagoras theorem
Construction : Put a perpendicular BD from B to AC ,
where AD = x and CB = h-x ,
Proof : Consider the two triangles
A
Δ ABC and Δ ABD, these two triangles
are similar to each other because of AA x h
similarity. This is because both the triangle p D
have a right angle and one common angle (h-x)
at A.
In Δ ABC and Δ BDC both are similar C

So by these similarity,

A
P2 = h * x and b2 = h (h – x)
x h

Adding both L.H.S. and R.H. S. (h-x)

C
P + b = h.x + h (h - x)

Or P2 + b2 = h.x + h2 – h.x
h2 = p2 + b2
CONVERSE OF THE PYTHAGORAS
THEOREM
IN A TRIANGLE, IF SQUARE OF ONE SIDE IS EQUAL TO THE
SUM OF THE SQUARES OF THE OTHER TWO SIDES, THEN
THE ANGLE OPPOSITE THE FIRST SIDE IS A RIGHT ANGLE.
Given: In a triangle ABC in which AC2 = AB2 + BC2

m(∠ B) = 90°

What is
Trigonometry?
Trigonometry is a branch
of mathematics that
studies triangles and the relationships
between their sides and the angles
between these sides.
Q: What is trigonometry?

A: Trigonometry is the study of how the sides and

angles of a triangle are related to each other.

Q: WHAT? That's all?

A: Yes, that's all. It's all about triangles, and you can't
get much simpler than that.

Find the values of

o Find the sine, the cosine, and the tangent of 30°.

Begin by sketching a 30°-60°-90° triangle. To

make the calculations simple, you can choose 1 as
the length of the shorter leg. From Pythagoras
Theorem , it follows that the length of the longer
leg is √3 and the length of the hypotenuse is 2.

sin 30° = opp./hyp. = 1/2 = 0.5

2
cos 30° = adj./hyp. = √3/2 ≈ 0.8660 1
30°
tan 30° = opp./adj. = 1/√3 = √3/3 ≈ 0.5774 √3
o Find the sine, the cosine, and the tangent of 45°.

Begin by sketching a 45°-45°-90° triangle.

Because all such triangles are similar, you can
make calculations simple by choosing 1 as the
length of each leg. The length of the hypotenuse
is √2 (Pythagoras Theorem).

sin 45° = opp./hyp. = 1/√2 =2/√2≈ 0.7071 √2

1
cos 45° = adj./hyp. = 1/√2 =2/√2≈ 0.7071
45°

tan 45° = opp./adj. = 1/1 = 1 1

o Find the sine, the cosine, and the tangent of 60°.

Begin by sketching a 30°-60°-90° triangle. To

make the calculations simple, you can choose 1
as the length of the shorter leg. From
Pythagoras Theorem , it follows that the length
of the longer leg is √3 and the length of the
hypotenuse is 2.

sin 60° = opp./hyp = √3/2 ≈ 0.8660

60°

1
cos 60° = adj./hyp = ½ = 0.5 30°

√3
tan 60° = opp./adj. = √3/1 ≈ 1.7320

(5 min) quiz
Rashad runs the parasailing ride at a lakeside resort. His speedboat tows a person
with a parachute canopy. Once they get up to full speed, the customer is “flying”
above the lake, as in Display 3.9. At full speed, the rider’s height above the lake
depends on the rider’s weight and the length of the light nylon tow rope. (For
these questions, assume that the rope is straight, even though it would sag a little,
and round your length answers to the nearest foot.)

For proficient students wishing to be advanced:

 Research a topic related to : the six trigonometric
functions in terms of right triangles
 Present the information in PowerPoint
presentation or other format of your choice. The
information you present must be interesting to you
and must go beyond what was studied in class.
Your presentation must be clear and
understandable to your teacher and your
