Food: The Basic Need of The Family

 Food

is the most important of the basic needs of the family; a substance composed of different nutrients taken from plant and animals.

Importance of Food
 To produce

heat and energy for the

body  To make the body grow and repair damaged parts  To enable the body to function normally and prevent diseases

Food is eaten during the three (3) square meals  Breakfast-light meal eaten in the morning; made up of fruits, cereals or bread, main dish and beverages

 Lunch

and Supper- eaten in the afternoon and evening respectively; composed of soup, cereal or bread, main dish, side dish and dessert

 Snack/merienda-

very important to supplement the food intake duringthe regular meal; must be composed of the right kind of food in the right amount.

The Three Basic Food Groups


GO

 Energy& Heat- giving carbohydrates and fat rich foods they give our body heat and energy

Grow

Body-building foods or proteinrich foods supplies the body with energy and repairs and builds our body

GLOW

Body-regulating or protective foods -they are rich in minerals and vitamins Minerals-They assist in regulating body processes

Vitamins- regulative & protective substances found in small quantities of food; promote growth, give strength and protect the body from diseases.

Water-

not considered as a nutrient but is vey important because it carries nutrients to all parts of the body and carries waste products away; helps regulate the body temperature and aids in digestion; acts as a solvent for food and gases

Food Needs of Different Groups of People

Varying amounts of the three basic food groups are needed by individuals of different age, depending on which state of development they are in

Food Production
Studies reveal that he number one cause of malnutrition in the Philippines is poverty. y The Filipino family should start learning how to use his home lot and spare time to produce some foods that will help supplement not only its food needs but also its budget

The first step to be undertaken by the family when it decides to be involved in food production is planningselection of the type food to produce y Samaka approach-the plan will show that food production includes vegetable growing, fruit propagation, fish cultivation, poultry raising, piggery or carabao raising.

Factors to be considered in deciding on what type of food is to be produced:

The other important step in food production is the preparation of the family members. The success of food production will depend on their knowledge of the following:

Family Size and Food Needs


 Family size

affects the amount of food that must be provided and made available in the consumption of members.  It also affects the adequacy of nutrients that members get from what is available to eat.

 Large families

with more members need to provide more food, compared to small ones, if all members were to be adequately nourished.  Small families can provide bigger budget for their food needs, since they are only from members.

Recommended Dietary Allowance

Food and Nutrition Research Institute(FNRI) -released information n the daily Recommended Dietary Allowance(RDA) for Filipinos according to nutrients, specific food groups and household measures

RDA- a guide determining how much nutrients are needed by an individual a day.

Factors in Planning Meals


Properly planned meals are important because of the following: They ensure adequate nutrition for all. Available resources such as money, food supplies and fuel are being maximized.

Time and energy are effectively used. Varied, appetizing meals are served.
