Transmission Media

BY VIVEK AND VANSH

XII-A
Transmission Media

 Transmission media is the medium over the messages are

transmitted
 A communication channel is also called as medium
Types of Transmission Media

 Wired/Guided media
 Wireless/Unguided media
Guided Media

 In this type of media, signal energy is enclosed and guided within a solid medium.
 The guided media is used either for point-to-point links or a shared link with various
connections.
 In guided media, interference is generated by emissions in the adjacent cables.
Twisted Pair Cable

 It was invented by Alexander Graham Bell.

 Twisted pair cables have two conductors that are
generally made up of copper and each conductor has
insulation.
 These two conductors are twisted together, thus giving the
name twisted pair cables.
Advantages Of Twisted Pair Cable

1. These cables are cost-effective and easy to install owing

to their compact size.
2. They are generally used for short-distance transmission of
both voice and data.
3. It is less costly as compared to other types of cables.
Used in telephone lines
Disadvantages Of Twisted Pair Cable

1. The connection established using Unshielded Twised Paired

Cable is not secure.
2. They are efficient only for a distance up to 100 meters and
have to be installed in pieces.
3. These cables have limited bandwidth.
Coaxial Cable

 A coaxial cable is an electrical cable with a copper conductor and

an insulator shielding around it and a braided metal mesh that
prevents signal interference and cross talk. Coaxial cable is also
known as coax.

Applications :
1. Television: Coaxial cable is used in television cable wires.
Advantages Of Coaxial Cable

1. Coaxial cables support high bandwidth.

2. It is easy to install coaxial cables.
3. Less affected by noise or cross-talk or electromagnetic inference.
4. Coaxial cables support multiple channels
Disadvantages Of Coaxial Cable

1. Coaxial cables are expensive than twisted pair cable.

2. The coaxial cable must be grounded in order to prevent
any crosstalk.
3. As a Coaxial cable has multiple layers it is very bulky.
Optical Fibers

 Fiber optics, or optical fiber, refers to the technology that

transmits information as light pulses along a glass or
plastic fiber.
 A fiber optic cable can contain a varying number of these
glass fibers from a few up to a couple hundred.
Advantages Of Optical Fibres

 Transmit data over long distance with high security.

 Data transmission speed is very high
Disadvantages Of Optical Fibres

 It is very expensive
 Need special care while installation
Unguided Media

 In the unguided media, the signal energy propagates through a

wireless medium. Wireless media is used for radio broadcasting in
all directions.
 Microwave links are chosen for long-distance broadcasting
transmission unguided media.
 Interference is also a problem in unguided media, overlapping
frequency bands from competing signals can alter or eliminate a
signal.
Micro Wave

 Microwave is a line-of-sight wireless communication technology that uses high

frequency beams of radio waves to provide high speed wireless connections that
can send and receive voice, video, and data information.
 Microwaves are electromagnetic waves which have frequency range between 1
GHz to 300 GHz.
Radio Wave

 The radio waves have frequency range from 3 KHz to 1 GHz.

 These waves are easy to generate and these can travel long
distances.
 These waves are omni directional in nature which means that they
can travel in all the directions.
 They are widely used for the communication between both indoor
and outdoor because they have the property that they can penetrate
through the walls very easily.
Infrared Waves

 Infraredwaves transmits data through air and can

propagate throughout a room, but will not penetrate walls.
 It is a secured medium of signal transmission
 For example TV remotes
