ART
HISTORY
Stone Age is a term used to describe a period of history when
stones were used to make tolls for survival.

Though prehistoric humans would not necessarily possess

the complex rational capabilities to tell their story through
written records and accounts, some artifacts in the form of
cave paintings and sculptures would serve as the
“storytellers.”
THREE PERIODS OF THE STONE AGE

● Paleolithic (he late years of the Old Stone Age)

● Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age)

● Neolithic (New Stone Age)

Paleolithic
It also called Old Stone Age, ancient cultural stage, or
level, of human development, characterized by the use of
rudimentary chipped stone tools.

Prehistoric Art

Archeological explorations reveal that there has been a

gradual shift from a nomadic lifestyle of early humans to
that of permanent settlements, paving the wat for the rise of
early civilizations.
Venus of Willendorf
Late Paleolithic figure found at
Willendorf, Lower Austria, and known as
the Venus of Willendorf, limestone
figurine originally coloured with red
ochre, 30,000–25,000 BCE; in the Natural
History Museum, Vienna.
Paleolithic Art

-It is a product of climate change. As the climate got

colder, part of the early humans’ instincts is to look
for shelters that would provide them with warmth.

-Caves became protective havens for the early

humans and these caves paved the way for the birth
of their first attempts to create art.

Mesolithic
Mesolithic

also called Middle Stone Age, ancient cultural stage that

existed between the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age), with its
chipped stone tools, and the Neolithic (New Stone Age), with
its polished stone tools.
Mesolithic Art

● Rock paintings, or rock art, are one of the most

common types of art in the Mesolithic Age. But unlike
the cave paintings of the Paleolithic Age, Mesolithic
rock paintings depicted a wide variety of events from
hunting to farming to dancing. Since Mesolithic people
no longer had to live in caves to keep warm since the
Ice Age ended, they painted on outdoor rocks instead.
Neolithic
Neolithic

● The Neolithic or New Stone Age was a period in human

development from around 10,000 BCE until 3,000 BCE.
Considered the last part of the Stone Age, the Neolithic period
is signified by a progression in behavioral and cultural
characteristics including the cultivation of wild and domestic
crops and the use of domesticated animals.
Neolithic Art

● Neolithic art has developed especially when life for the early
humans has become more stable. They have learned to
cultivate the land and domesticate animals. By 4000 BCE,
there were several monumental and architectural structures
erected.
