COMPLETE

RANDOMIZED
DESIGN
WHAT IS A
COMPLETE RANDOMIZED
DSEIGN?
(CRD): Fixed effects One-Way

• CRD is the simplest type of experimental design.

Treatments are assigned completely at random to the
experimental units, with the exception that the number of
experimental units for each treatment may set by the
researcher.
• Are described with dependent variable, and the
way of grouping.

• There is no control in this design but the subjects

will undergo randomization procedures.
Completely Randomized Design (CRD): Fixed
Effects One-way ANOVA

1. Testing hypothesis to examine differences

between two;

2. Each treatment group represents

a population. More categorical
treatment groups.
ILLUSTRATION :

A researcher wants to determine if there is a

significant difference in the treatment of bread meal as
supplement feed upon the yield of mudcrab (Scylla
serrata) cultured in the fishpond.

Materials :
- 500 pieces of mudcrab
(S. serrata) fingerlings
- 5 compartments in the pond.
The 500 fingerlings are placed at random. Of the
500 fingerlings, 100 pcs. are in each compartment.
The weight of mudcrab(S. serrata) in each
compartment should be observed carefully and
ecological parameters such as pH, salinity, oxygen,
and temperature should be considered.
There are different levels
or percentage of bread meal
based on body weight as
supplemental feed in each
compartment.

F – test or analysis of variance (ANOVA) is

used to determine the significant
difference on the yield of mudcrab (S.
serrata) using bread meal as supplemental feed.

Fixed effects one-way ANOVA..

In applying a CRD or when groups indicate a

natural way of classification, the objectives can
be:

1. Estimating the mean;

2. Testing the difference between groups.
Advantages of completely randomized
designs:

1. Complete flexibility is allowed

- any number of treatments and
replicates may be used.
2. Relatively easy statistical analysis,
even with variable replicates and variable
experimental errors for different
treatments.
3. Analysis remains simple when data are
missing.

4. Provides the maximum number of

degrees of freedom for error for a given
number of experimental units and
treatments.
Disadvantages of completely randomized
designs

1. Relatively low accuracy due to lack of

restrictions which allows environmental
variation to enter experimental error.
2. Not suited for large numbers of
treatments because a relatively large
amount of experimental material is
needed which increases the variation.
