Life cycle of Mudfish
Biological Characteristics

 Obligate air-breathing
 Adults inhabit ponds, streams, and rivers, preferring the stagnant and muddy water of plains
 Found mainly in swamps, but also occurs in the lowland rivers. More common in relatively
deep (1-2 m), still water.
 Very common in freshwater plains
 Occur in medium to large rivers, brooks, flooded fields, and stagnant waters including
sluggish flowing canals
 Recorded as having been or being farmed in rice fields
 Survive the dry season by burrowing in the bottom mud of lakes, canals, and swamps as
long as skin and air-breathing apparatus remain moist and subsist on the stored fat
 Feed on fish, frogs, snakes, insects, earthworms, tadpoles, and crustacea ns
Life cycle and mating behavior

 Breeds in ditches, ponds and flooded paddy fields.

 Young shoal at the surface and are guarded by the male parent hiding below
the surface water
 In captivity, as soon as the male bends its body close to the female during
mating, milt is released following the release of the eggs.
Breeding of Channa Striata

 The parameters are observed that the natural spawning of

the fish and total larval body length of larvae. Findings:
Spawning is observed 30-37 hours after application of
ovaprim with a dose of 0.5 ml/kg, followed by application
of 0.3 ml /kg ovaprim dose with a spawning latency time
of 4-5 days.
How do snakeheads reproduce?

 They can spawn up to five times, each time laying more

than a thousand orange-yellow eggs, which are buoyant.
Sometimes they can lay many more, however,
approaching 50,000 eggs per year. Snakeheads often make
floating nests made of bits of vegetation to protect their
eggs.
 What do Channa striata eat?
triata as the most widely introduced species of snakeheads. The diet of
C. striata includes snakes, fishes, tadpoles, frogs, shrimps, snails, and
insects
 How long does it take for Mudfish to grow?
The northern snakehead can double its population in as few as 15
months. It reaches sexual maturity at age two or three, when it will be
about 30 to 35 cm (1 ft 0 in – 1 ft 2 in) long.
