WEB 2.0

The term Web 2.0 is associated with web applications that facilitate interactive systemic biases, interoperability, user-centered design and developing the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 is a combination of technologies, methodologies, approaches and business models -- its not just fancy technology. Web 2.0 refers to the adoption of open technologies and architectural frameworks to facilitate participative computing WEB 2.0 is to make a reference to a group of technologies which have become deeply associated with the term: blogs, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds etc., which facilitate a more socially connected Web where everyone is able to add to and edit the information space. Web 1.0 was all about connecting people. It was an interactive space, and I think Web 2.0 is of course a piece of jargon, nobody even knows what it means. If Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be all along. And in fact, you know, this 'Web 2.0', it means using the standards which have been produced by all these people working on Web 1.0."

PRECURSOR TO WEB 2.0

Amazon.com has allowed users to write reviews and consumer guides since its launch in 1995, in a form of self-publishing. Amazon also opened its API to outside developers in 2002. Previous developments also came from research in computersupported collaborative learning and computer-supported cooperative work and from established products like Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino(1996), all phenomena which preceded Web 2.0.

HISTORY

The term Web 2.0 did not resurface until 2003. In 2004, the term began its rise in popularity when O'Reilly Media and MediaLive hosted the first Web 2.0 conference. In their opening remarks, John Battelle and Tim O'Reilly outlined their definition of the "Web as Platform", where software applications are built upon the Web as opposed to upon the desktop. The unique aspect of this migration, they argued, is that "customers are building your business for you. They argued that the activities of users generating content (in the form of ideas, text, videos, or pictures) could be "harnessed" to create value.

SOCIAL BOOKMARKING & TAGGING (FOLKSONOMIES)

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to organize, store, manage and search for bookmarks of resources online. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren't shared, merely bookmarks that reference them. Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of the traditional browser-based system of folders. A folksonomy is a system of classification derived from the practice and method of collaboratively creating and managing tags to annotate and categorize content; this practice is also known as collaborative tagging, social classification, social indexing, and social tagging.

CONCEPTS OF WEB 2.0

Rich Internet Application (RIA) - It defines the experience brought from desktop to browser whether it is from a graphical point of view or usability point of view. Some buzz words related to RIA are AJAX and Flash. Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) - It is a key piece in Web 2.0 which defines how Web 2.0 applications expose its functionality so that other applications can leverage and integrate the functionality providing a set of much richer applications (Examples are: Feeds, RSS, Web Services, Mashups) Social Web - It defines how Web 2.0 tend to interact much more with the end user and making the end user an integral part.

TECHNOLOGIES BEHIND WEB 2.0

AJAX

Ajax programming uses JavaScript to upload and download new data from the web server without undergoing a full page reload. To allow users to continue to interact with the page, communications such as data requests going to the server are separated from data coming back to the page (asynchronously) The data fetched by an Ajax request is typically formatted in XML. When this data is received via Ajax, the JavaScript program then uses the Document Object Model (DOM) to dynamically update the web page based on the new data.

ADOBE FLEX(FRAMEWORK)/FLASH(PLAYER) Flex makes it easier for programmers to populate large data grids, charts, and other heavy user interactions. Applications programmed in Flex, are compiled and displayed as Flash within the browser.
