Objectives;
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
• Explain the important insights and reasons of multilingual education
in making education more responsive to cultural diversity;
• Appreciate the value of using his/her own Mother Tongue in dealing
with any classroom situations; and
• Recognize the importance of the use of mother tongue, Filipino, and
English in teaching and learning.
What is Language?
 Language is the foundation of every culture.
 It is an abstract system of word meaning and symbols for all aspects of
culture.
 According to SAPIRWHORF HYPOTHESIS "language does more than
simply describe reality, it also serves to shape the reality of a culture".

 Language includes;
 speech
 symbols
 written characters
 gestures
 numerals
 expression of non-verbal communication

What is Mother Tongue Based-
Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE)?
 Institutionalized in 2009 through DO No. 74, series of 2009.
 aims to improve students’ learning as well as their cultural awareness by
understanding the language.
 Section 4 of the Republic Act No. 10533, otherwise known as The
Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, provides that basic education
should be delivered in languages understood by the learners as it plays a
strategic role in shaping the formative years of learners.

with the first language of the

STAGES OF AN MLE
PROGRAM

1. STAGE I – Learning takes


place entirely in the child’s
home language.
2. STAGE II – Building fluency
in the Mother Tongue.

4. STAGE IV – Using both L1
and L2 for life long learning.
