SANGLA HILL
• SANGLA HILL A CITY LOCATED IN DISTRICT NANKANA SAHIB,
PUNJAB PAKISTAN

• THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF SANGLA HILL REMAINS

AROUND 43° IN JUNE.

• AUGUST AND JULY RECEIVES MORE RAINFALL AROUND 75 MM.

• RICE, WHEAT AND SUGARCANE ARE MAJOR CROPS OF SANGLA
HILL.
INTRODUCTION
• SUGARCANE IS A SPECIE OF TALL,PERENNIAL GRASS THAT IS
USED FOR SUGAR PRODUCTION.

• THE PLANTS ARE 2–6 M TALL WITH JOINTED, FIBROUS STALKS

THAT ARE RICH IN SUCROSE, WHICH ACCUMULATES IN THE
STALK INTERNODES.
SUGAR MANUFACTURING PROCESS
• SUGAR INDICATING SWEET CARBOHYDRATES, OBTAINED FROM PLANTS,
SUGARCANE & SUGAR BEET.

• PAKISTAN IS 12TH LARGEST PRODUCER OF SUGAR

• PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION OF SUGAR IS 25KG
• MORE THAN 81 SUGAR MILLS IN PAKISTAN.
HARVESTING AND TRANSPORTATION OF SUGARCANE

• SUGARCANE IS HARVESTED BY TWO METHODS

1. BY MANUAL
2. BY MECHANICAL
• IT IS TRANSPORTED BY MEANS OF :
1. ANIMAL DRIVEN CARTS
2. TROLLEYS
3. TRUCKS
HARVESTING AND TRANSPORTATION
HANDLING AND STORAGE

• STORED IN CANE YARDS CARRIED FROM CANE

YARD TO FEEDING AREA BY-

• HOOK/CHAIN- CRANES.- REELINGS- CONVEYER

BELT
CONVEYER BELT
CUTTING OF CANES

• TO AID THE CANE CRUSHING CANE KNIVES CUT CANE INTO

SMALL PIECES

• CUTTING OF CANE COMPLETED IN 4 CHAMBERS AFTER CUTTING

INTO VERY SMALL PIECES
EXTRACTION OF JUICE
• CANE CRUSHED TO BREAK HARD STRUCTURE
• CELLS CONTAINING JUICE ARE RUPTURED BUT NO JUICE
EXTRACTED

• INCREASE EFFICIENCY OF JUICE EXTRACTION SUBJECTED TO

CRUSHER WITH BLADES

• WATER IS ADDED IN THIS PROCESS TO INCREASE EXTRACTION

EFFICIENCY.
BAGASSE
• AFTER EXTRACTION OF JUICE THE RAW MATERIALS REMAINS IS
BAGASSE

• THIS BAGASSE IS USED TO OPERATE POWER HOUSE FOR MILLS

WORKING

• BAGGAS IS USED IN COMBUSTION PROCESS FOR STEAM

PRODUCTION AND THEN THIS STEAM IS USED FOR OPERATING
GENERATORS FOR ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION.
FILTRATION
• MUD FROM CLARIFIER STILL CONTAIN SOME RESIDUAL
JUICE

• THIS MUD IS AGAIN FILTERED TO EXTRACT RESIDUAL

JUICE IN ROTARY VACUUM FILTERS SO THAT ALL JUICE
CAN BE USED AND HENCE MINIMUM OR NO LOSS OF JUICE.
EVAPORATION
• STEAM USED TO EVAPORATE JUICE
• 1 LITER STEAM TO EVAPORATE 4 LITER JUICE
• STEAM TEMPERATURE 113⁰ TO 130°C AT 1ST PAN AND 55°C AT LAST PAN
• EACH SUBSEQUENT VESSEL WITH DECREASING PRESSURE
• LAST PAN BEING UNDER ALMOST TOTAL VACUUM
CRYSTALLIZATION

• CRYSTALLIZATION IS CARRIED OUT IN SINGLE EFFECT HIGH-VACUUM

BOILING PANS

• MIXTURE OF CRYSTALS AND MOTHER LIQUOR (MOLASSES) RESULTING

FROM THE CRYSTALLIZATION TRANSFERRED TO CRYSTALLIZER AT LOW
TEMPRATURE
CENTRIFUGATION
• CENTRIFUGATION SEPARATES SUGAR FROM MOLASSES
• CENTRIFUGE OPERATES AT 100-1800 RPM
• SUGAR CRYSTALS ARE WASHED WITH 85°C WATER.
• CRYSTALLIZATION AND CENTRIFUGATION TO OBTAIN REFINED
SUGAR CRYSTALS
RAW AND REFINED SUGAR
• RAW SUGAR
• OBTAINED DIRECTLY FROM SUGARCANE JUICE WITHOUT REFINING.
• BROWN IN COLOR DUE TO MOLASSES
• REFINED SUGAR.
• HAVE WHITE LUSTER AND TRANSPARENT
• BLEACHED TO REMOVE COLOR AND OTHER IMPURITIES
DRYING AND STORAGE
• HOT AIR IS USED FOR DRYING
• SIEVING- FINE, MEDIUM AND BOLD GRAINS
• STORAGE IN GODOWNS
• COOL, DRY, MOISTURE AND ODOR FREE
FACTORS EFFECTING SUGAR STORAGE
• TEMPERATURE
• MOISTURE
• QUALITY OF SUGAR
• LIGHTGRAIN SIZE AND DISTRIBUTION
• COMPRESSION
