1PROPERTIES
OF SUBSTANCE
Physical & Chemical
How would you describe
yourself so that
someone else could
identify you?
• On a separate sheet of paper,
write as many physical
descriptions of yourself as you
can. Do not put your name on
the paper.
•Anything that has a mass and a volume
2 Forms of Matter
a. Substance
b. Mixture
Substance
-simply a pure form of
matter
-composed of 1 type of
atom or molecule
Physical Properties
• -can be observed or measured without
changing the identity of the matter.
• Examples:
• Density
• Malleability
• Ductility
• Solubility
• Boiling Point
• Melting & Freezing Point
• Electrical Conductivity
Physical Properties
• Density-The
amount of matter
in a given volume.
• D=m/v(mass/
volume)
• Low density = float
• High density = sink
Physical Properties
• Density equals mass divided by volume.
• D=m/v
Calculating Density
Density= Mass/Volume

• A marble has a volume of 5 cm3

and a mass of 15 g. What is the
density of the marble?

• Given: m=15 g, V= 5 cm3

• Formula: D=M/V
• Solution:D=15g/ 5 cm3
• Answer: D= 3 or 3g/cm3
Practice #1

• A bar of copper has a mass of

216 g and a volume of 24 cmᴲ.
What is the density of copper?

• Given: m=___ g, V= ____ cm3

• Formula: D=M/V
• Solution:D=____g/ ____ cm3
• Answer: D= ____ or ____g/cm3
Practice #2
The volume of a candy bar is 55
cmᴲ. The mass of the candy bar
is 70 g. What s the density of the
candy bar?

•Given: m=___ g, V= ____ cm3

•Formula: D=M/V
•Solution:D=____g/ ____ cm3
•Answer: D= ____ or ____g/cm3
Physical Properties
• Ductility- ability to be pulled into a thin
strands
• EXAMPLES: Wire, Paper clip, Copper wire

Physical Properties
• Malleability- The ability to be pressed or
pounded into a thin sheet
• EXAMPLE: Tin foil

Physical Propeties
• Solubility: ability to
dissolve in another
substance
• EXAMPLE: Adding
sugar to coffee

Physical Properties
• Boiling Point:
changes from a
Liquid to a gas

• EXAMPLE:Water
to steam

Physical Properties
• Melting point-
Solid to Liquid

• Freezing point:
Liquid becomes
solid

• EXAMPLE: Ice
cube
Physical Properties
• Electrical
conductivity:
substance allows
electricity to flow
through it

• EXAMPLE: Water
conducts
electricity

Chemical Property
• ability of a substance to change
into a new substance with
different properties.

• Examples:
• Combustibility & Flammability
• Reactivity
• Corrosive
Chemical Properties
• Flammability &
ability of a
chemical to
burn or ignite,

• EXAMPLE:
Fireworks,
Firecrackers,
Gasoline,
Alcohol,
Acetone
Chemical Properties
• Reactivity-
ability of
matter to
combine
chemically with
other
substances.

• EXAMPLE: iron
is highly
reactive with
oxygen = RUST
Chemical Properties
• Corrosive-
causes damage
by chemical
action.

• EXAMPLE:
Sodium
hydroxide and
phenol, can
cause burns to
the skin and
eyes.
