What is It
Arthur is spinning a spinner like the one shown at the right while he
is playing with his friends. What is the probability that he spins a 4
on his next turn? You can solve the problem using 4-step plan
Understand:
• Know what is asked: The Probability of getting a 4 when Arthur spins a spinner
• Know the given facts: There are 6 equal sections in the spinner
Plan:
There are 6 equal sections. One of the sections is labeled 4. Use the formula of a getting a
4.
P( E)= number of times, an event can occur
Total number of accounts
Where E refers to the event
Solve:
If E is the event of getting a 4, then the formula becomes
P(4)= 1
6 The probability that Arthur can spin a 4 is 1
Check and Look back: 6
Another Problem:
Roseth has a jar of marbles. In a jar with 15 marbles, 7 are red. What is the
probability of Roseth getting red marbles out of her jar?
Understand:
Know what is asked: The Probability of getting red marbles out of 15 marbles
Know the given facts: There are 15 marbles in ajar, 7 are red.
Plan
There are 15 marbles in a jar. Seven marbles are red. Use the formula of a getting a red
marble
P( R)= number of times, red marbles can be get
Total number of marbles
Where R refers to the red marbles
Solve:
If R is color of getting 7 red marbles, then the formula becomes
P(R)= 7
15
The probability that Roseth can get a red marble is 7
15.
Check and Look back:
• Since the jar has 15 marbles, the probability of
occurrence of 7 red marbles is 7
15
• Since the color of 15 marbles in the jar has 7 red marbles,
the
probability that you can get red marbles is 7
15.
