What is Volcano?
• A volcano is a rupture in the crust of a
planetary-mass object, such as Earth,
that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and
gases to escape from a magma
chamber below the surface. On
Earth, volcanoes are most often found
where tectonic plates are diverging or
converging, and most are found
underwater.

How and Where do volcanoes
occur?
Most form along plate boundaries ….
1. in subduction zones (converging
plates);
2. where plates are pulling apart
(divergent plates);
3. over hot spots
How and Where Volcanoes Form
Volcanic activity takes place primarily at SUBDUCTION ZONES

materials in the asthenosphere, leading to magma surroundings,

Igneous Activity at Subduction Zones
As a seafloor slab sinks into the mantle at a subduction zone, melting of rock
occurs in the mantle above the subducted plate.
The magma rises through the crust where it may form volcanoes.

Most volcanoes occur associated with subduction zones (convergent margin).

Seafloor spreading (divergent margin) is associated with a large amount of
volcanic activity.

Major Volcanoes Around the World

Volcanoes are classified
by shape, size, and orientation

4 Different Types of Volcanoes According to Shape -

The manner of eruption for cinder cones is relatively simple. When
the lava erupts, cinders of it are blown into the air. These fragmented
cinders fall a short distance from the opening, thus creating the cone.

shield volcanoes can be very, very big in size. However, they are not
as dangerous as that size might make it seem. This is because the
eruption of lava out of shield volcanoes is not accompanied by
pyroclastic material (bursts of gas and particles).
Shield volcanoes may be tall but tend to be very broad, with less steep
slopes than other volcanoes. https://youtu.be/byJp5o49IF4
The general structure of composite volcanoes is tall and symmetrical
and with steep sides. Commonly, composite volcanoes erupt hot
gases, ash, lava, and pumice as well as stiff, slow-moving lava.
Moreover, deadly mudflows—also commonly known as ‘lahars’—can
also accompany the eruption. https://youtu.be/1u1Ys4m5zY4

SUPERVOLCANOES
A caldera is a large crater-shaped basin that forms when the top
of a volcano collapses because of large eruptions.

Both shield and composite volcanoes can form features
called calderas, a huge crater formed by the collapse of the
volcano when magma rapidly erupts from underneath it.
SUBMARINE VOLCANOES
Submarine volcanoes are
underwater vents or fissures
in the Earth's surface from
which magma can erupt.
Many submarine volcanoes
are located near areas of
tectonic plate formation,
known as mid-ocean ridges.
The volcanoes at mid-ocean
ridges alone are estimated to
account for 75% of the
magma output on Earth.

SUBGLACIAL VOLCANOES
A subglacial volcano, also
known as a glaciovolcano,
is a volcanic form produced
by subglacial eruptions or
eruptions beneath the
surface of a glacier or ice
sheet which is then melted
into a lake by the rising lava.
During the eruption, the heat
of the lava from the
subglacial volcano melts the
overlying ice.
