Origin

 Ajwain is a native of Egypt and is


a popular seed crop.
 The major ajwain producing
countries are India, Persia, Iran,
Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan and
North Africa.
BOTANICAL
DISCRIPTION
Botanical description

It is an annual erect herb.


Height ranges from 70-90
cm.
It has soft fine hairs.
It has moderate level of
tolerance to drought.
Leaves

Branched leafy stems.


Feather like leaves.
2.5 cm long.
Flowers

Terminal.

Pedunulate.

White in colour.
Seed

Oval in shape.
Minute size look like
cumin seeds.
Green to brown in
colour.
Seeds have a pungent
and bitter taste.
Oil Morphology

Botonical Name: Trachyspermum ammi.

Taste: sharp hot taste.

Appearance: pale yellowish brown in colour.

Plant part used: Seed.

Soil and Climate
Grown as winter crop in subtropical or temperate
climate.
Grow on any soil type from clay to silt loam.
 Sensitive to water logging.
It can be grown in rain fed areas.
Moderately cool and dry climate favour good plant
growth.
 Grow best in neutral Soils .
 Temperature ranges from 15-27 centigrade for
germination.
Mode Of Pollination

Flowers are portentous.

Cross pollination occurs through insects.

Time Of Sowing

It is mainly a rabi crop.

October-November.
Land Preparation

Soil should be brought to fine tilth.


Should be free from weeds.
10 – 15 t\ha FYM mixed into the soil before final
plouging.
Plough 3-4 times before sowing followed by
planking to conserve moisture.

Before sowing apply full dose of P&K.

N is applied in three equal splits of dose.


a) First at sowing time.
b) Second and third at30 days interval.

10-15 t\ha FYM should be added in soil.


Irrigation

Irrigation provided immediately after sowing if


there is no rain.

Later at 1 week interval up to 1 month.

When seed germination complete irrigate after 15


days.
Harvesting
Harvested in may.
Plants start flowering in 2 months.
The crop is harvested when flower heads turn
brown.
Then tied into bundles and stacked for drying.
Threshed on a clean floor and separate the clean
seeds.
Yield

An average yield is 1100-1400 Kg\ha.

USES OF AJWAIN
Edible Uses
 Ajwain seeds have been used in traditional Indian cooking.

 The seeds are also used in bread and biscuit dough and then
sprinkled over the top when baked.

 Middle Eastern recipes incorporate carom to boost the flavor


of meat and rice dishes.

 As a preservative in chutneys, pickles, and jams.

 Make herbal tea.



Medical Uses

 It is basically used in stomach ache.


Ajwain oil is anti-infectious, antibacterial, antiviral,
anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and a tonic.
 Ajwain oil is used for whooping cough and toothache .
Digestive weakness.
Cholera.
Diarrhea.
Lower blood pressure.
Used for weight loss.
Skin care.
Economical Overview

In Pakistan average yield from an acre is 200- 250


kg per acre.

Price of 1 kg is approximately 80 rupees.

A farmer can earn 12,000-14,000 rupees from one


acre.
Annual production is 300-400 ton in Pakistan.
