The 5 of 10
largest water
desalination •In this part, we will take a look at the largest
desalination in the world plants
plants in the
world
Ras Al Khair, Saudi
Arabia
• The Largest

• - 1,036,000 m3/day

• - operations in 2014

• Employees 3500 (2014) -

• - reverse osmosis (RO) technologies

• - capacity of 2,400MW.
Shuaiba 3, Saudi
Arabia
• The third largest desalination plant in the
world

• - 880,000 m3/day

• operations in 2001 –

• - reverse osmosis (RO) technologies

• capacity of 5600 MW
DEWA Station M,
Dubai
• The sixth largest desalination plant in the
world –

• - 636,000 m3/day

• operations in 2012 –

• Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) distillation

technology -

• capacity of 2,885MW
Fujairah 2, United Arab
Emirates
•The tenth largest desalination plant in the
world

•– 591,000 m3/day

•- operations in 2007

• - reverse osmosis (RO) technologies

Water desalination using Reverse
osmosis (RO) technology.
Hybrid desalination
technologies and processes.
• Water storage is now one of the major
environmental issues.
• There is the increasing interest in the
Hybrid development of technologies to get advantage
from the alternate source like seawater
Desalination • Thermal distillation can be done by three ways
systems: commonly as multistage flash distillation
(MSF) , reverse osmosis (RO) and multi-effect
distillation (MED)[1]
• A Hybrid system is the combination of two
separate technologies.

Hybrid • The main purpose of hybrid technology or

processes is to overcome the existing
desalination limitations in the individual technologies.
technology: • A Hybrid system is the combination of two
separate technologies.
Forward • In this technology the nanofiltration are applied
to the regeneration of the draw solution to give
osmosis clean water . The focus is on the selection of
right and proper draw solute. In the forward
nanofiltration osmosis nanofiltration technology the draw
solute is diluted and then it encounters with the
hybrid nanofiltration for the recovery of the draw
systems: solution and for the production desalinated clean
water[4].

Water desalination
by distillation :
The distillation used in the desalination process has
four types:

• For normal distillation.
