Furthermore, if I were given the opportunity, I would be on LEVEL THREE, as I have always believed “Go big, or go
home.” But realistically, when starting out LEVEL ONE will be sufficient for me to gain experience and skills for me
to reach the highest level. In level three, responsibilities are much greater compared to level one. Because at level three
you are the one who answers to the owners and clients and defend your people as this will reflect on how you handled
the project. Everything must go through you for your approval. Compared to level one, wherein your responsibilities
are minimal, and you just have to be responsible for what is given to you. There is lesser scope on who and what you
will manage.

For our group, we want to venture into MANAGEMENT because venturing into that function gives a big edge as an
engineer. I really believe that becoming an engineer is not only about the ability to solve complex problems or to design
something out of the extraordinary, but it also deals on how you work in a team, manage a project, and being mindful
of both solving the problems in the project while having a good coordination with the people you work with.
Success is not just a walk in the park, it doesn’t come instantly. Everything should start small; I will firmly choose
Level One and work my way up slowly. At this level, I can gain a lot of experience, be an apprentice to tenured
engineers where I can ask from them on how the system works in the company. In that way, I do not only learn from
them, I also valued respect and correct order in the organization.

MANAGEMENT is a specific function of an engineer which I would want to venture in the future. This is a heavy
responsibility as an engineer, especially that it needs to manage groups of people. However, despite the weight of the
responsibility, I am challenging myself to enhance my social and leadership skills while I’m still a student so that I can
apply it in my field. Besides, one can never accomplish a project alone, it takes teamwork and collaboration to
successfully accomplish what is expected of the group.
I’ve learned from the experiences of successful people in the industry that their journey has always started with humble
beginnings. Starting with first-line management enables me to get a better understanding of the workflow on the
ground. Being the closest contact to the workers, it would be my responsibility to make sure that the organizational
objectives and plans are implemented effectively.

For my future endeavors, I want to venture on manufacturing. I am really fascinated by how products are made and
how they are automatically done with the help of various machinery. It is satisfying to watch the processes in creating
raw material to an actual usable product. I want to help in the optimization of the industrial processes in a plant.
As a beginner in the field, I want to enter a LEVEL ONE job because I think I still have a lot to learn. I need to know
the basics from a senior employee before I can work on my own. I think that the tasks that would be given to me are
machine troubleshooting, maintenance and checking, with the supervision of a senior. For me, I like to start with the
level one tasks to fully understand the machine processes and gain from that experience to prepare myself for higher
tasks.

We want to venture into MANAGEMENT and personally, it is an important skill and function of an engineer. All
throughout the four years of studying engineering, management is barely discussed and applied to all students. Being a
student leader makes me want to venture into management when I work in the industry because I want to apply my soft
skills that I acquired. Moreover, I believe that these skills would open me to wider opportunities.
I want to gain experience first and I want to be at LEVEL ONE where I can have the chance to manage a small group or
a small project. In that level, I think I will have the responsibility of managing a small task to accomplish. Time flies
and the responsibilities will become bigger, and the skills become more polished, then I would be in LEVEL THREE.

The organization we
want to join
ACTION LEARNING EXERCISE 1.2:
What company does each member want to work in in the future? What is
the nature of the company/product/services and who is the current top
manager?
The organization we want to join
I want to work in Tsuneishi Heavy Industries - Cebu, as they are the prominent medium-
sized shipbuilding company here in Cebu. Shipbuilding, ship repair and manufacturing of
outfitting for ships and vessels constitute the primary business of the company. Also, as it is close
to home this gives me an opportunity to work in a field that I know my profession will gain
experience from while being close to my family. Tsuneishi has given jobs to many people,
especially in our community, and has allowed these people to grow and have a future outside the
country. Currently the top manager of the company is Yasuaki Seto, he is the president for the
Tsuneishi Group of Company here in Cebu and the general manager is Hirohisa Kinoshita who is
more on the relations side of the company.

Managerial Skills
ACTION LEARNING EXERCISE 1.3:
You have just been hired as the new head of an audit team for a
national accounting firm. With four years of experience, you feel
technically well prepared for the assignment. However, this is your
first formal appointment as a “manager.” Things are complicated at
the moment. The team has 12 members of diverse demographic and
cultural backgrounds, as well as work experience. There is an intense
workload and lots of performance pressure. How will this situation
challenge you to develop and use essential managerial skills and
related competencies to successfully manage the team to high levels of
auditing performance? Among the various managerial skills and
competencies, which do you consider the most difficult to develop, and
why?
It would be a lot of pressure in my end to be appointed as the head of the audit
team. It would test my capabilities to handle a greater task in the company. Knowing that
the team is made up of people from various demographic and cultural backgrounds, it
would be incredibly challenging in communicating my thoughts and delivering tasks.
However, as the leader of an audit team, I must be an effective communicator.
Each member of the team has something to offer on the table, but it is always the
job of the head to guide the team. Based on the circumstances, I must develop managerial
skills and associated proficiencies, specifically technical skills, and human and
interpersonal skills, in ability to accomplish well enough as a leader and take the best
strategy for the team to achieve top-level auditing quality and performance.
I find it hard to effectively communicate my thoughts, thus I find the human and
interpersonal skills to be the most challenging to cultivate among the other managerial
skills and competencies. Oftentimes, I do not have the right words or terms to say in a
conversation, especially when I also speak other languages. However, I am sensitive and
willing to learn and know more about people by attentively listening to and
comprehending what they want to say. This is essential in managing people with
demographic diversity.
Ethical Dilemmas
ACTION LEARNING EXERCISE 1.4:
What ethical dilemmas have you encountered in any organization that you
joined (within or outside school)? Why do you consider that as an ethical
dilemma?
The ethical dilemma that I encountered happened recently when I was appointed as the
Head of Programs Committee in a regional level organization. Our committee was tasked to
spearhead the preparations for the student conference happening next month but very few details
were given about the event. As the Head of the committee, I got worried because of the big event
given with a little amount of time we have for the preparations. At first, I was excited because I was
appointed as an officer in a regional level organization considering the benefits we would receive if
we delivered our job well together with the other positions and extra-curricular activities I am
holding. Juggling my academics with my extra-curricular activities, I got to a point where I
experienced a burn out in my system. When my mind says yes to the challenge because I thought I
can do it, but my body is already saying no with my lifestyle. I was torn with a decision of letting
go one of my commitments to decrease my workload or go along with it since it is only temporary,
and the benefits will be worth it. I came to a decision of resigning to my post as the Committee
Head when I recalled my principles that physical and mental health should be my non-negotiables.
I consider this experience of mine as an ethical dilemma because from its definition, ethical
dilemmas take place in a decision-making context where any of the available options require the
person to violate or compromise on their ethical standards. My situation involves deciding whether
to minimize my workload or to compromise my health for the sake of the benefits I will get in the
future.
What would
you do?
ACTION LEARNING EXERCISE 1.5:
You have just seen one of your classmates snap a cell phone photo of an essay
question on the exam everyone is taking. The instructor missed it and you’re not
sure if anyone else saw it. You know that the instructor is giving an exam to
another section of the course next class period. Do you let this pass and pretend it
isn’t all that important? Or, do you take some action? What type of moral
management do you think your action belongs to (immoral, amoral, or moral)?
I will take the appropriate action needed in this situation. The purpose of conducting exams is to
test the learnings of the students on a specific set of topics. The integrity of the results will be compromised
when immoral actions will be consented – specifically cheating by taking a photo of the essay question on
the exam. Doing so might lead to an unfavorable consequence for my classmate. To lessen the weight of
the consequences, I can report to the teacher anonymously so that the teacher can possibly change the essay
questions to maintain the integrity of the exam. As a witness of the immoral act, my decision – whether I
take the necessary actions or not, impacts the involved people in the situation. Moreso, the ends do not
justify the means. Even though, the receiver of the leaked questions might get a better score in the exam it
could never justify the act of cheating because there are other morally acceptable ways of achieving better
scores.
This is a moral management type, considering ethical behavior as a personal goal. The decision that
was made was based in the full consideration of ethical issues, which in this case is honesty. Although
Caroll suggests that most managers should act amorally, studies show that amoral management can lead to
employees’ unethical behavior. According to a study led by a Baylor University researcher, an organization
that presents an ethical face but whose managers fail to respond to internal ethical situations delivers
conflicting messages to its employees, which can lead to a lack of moral courage and an increase in
unethical behavior (Austin, 2021). If I turn a blind eye on the situation, identifying under intentional
amoral management, my classmate will continue to think that his/her actions were morally acceptable.

supports or displays sustainable practices; thus, actively pursues
corporate social responsibility. Include a short description of the company
and how at least 3 reasons why it exemplifies corporate social
responsibility
Eco Hub Cebu is one of the companies in the Philippines that practices sustainability by offering
eco-friendly products that are affordable. It is campaigning on purchasing sustainably affordable
products that are useful everyday such as toothbrushes, eating utensils, tumblers, and pens.
The company exemplifies corporate social responsibility because of the following reasons:
