10.CONCLUSION
1.What is BRT system ???
• Bus rapid transit, also called a busway or transitway, is a bus-based public
transport system designed to have better capacity and reliability than a
conventional bus system.
• Purpose:-
• Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high-quality bus-based transit system that delivers
fast, comfortable, and cost-effective services at metro-level capacities.
• Typically, a BRT system includes roadways that are dedicated to buses, and gives
priority to buses at intersections where buses may interact with other traffic;
alongside design features to reduce delays caused by passengers boarding or leaving
buses, or paying fares. BRT aims to combine the capacity and speed of a metro with
the claimed flexibility, lower cost and simplicity of a bus system.
2.History of BRT system (BRTS):-

• The first BRT system in the world was the Busway in

Runcorn New Town, England, which entered service in 1971.
• As of March 2018, a total of 166 cities in six continents have
implemented BRT systems, accounting for 4,906 km (3,048
mi) of BRT lanes and about 32.2 million passengers every
day, of which about 19.6 million passengers ride daily in
Latin America, which has the most cities with BRT systems,
with 54, led by Brazil with 21 cities. The Latin American
countries with the most daily ridership are Brazil (10.7M),
Colombia (3.06M), and Mexico (2.5M). In the other regions,
China (4.3M) and Iran (2.1M) also stand out. Currently,
TransJakarta is the largest BRT network in the world with
approximately 251.2 kilometres (156.1 mi) of corridors
connecting the Indonesian capital city.
3.BRT system in India :-
• Rapid growth in the number of motor vehicles has
resulted in severe congestion and higher travel
times in cities across India. Due to limited road
space and lack of public transport infrastructure,
it has increasingly become important to plan our
transportation systems, earmarking dedicated
space for public modes. Organized and reliable
CBS and state of the art planning of BRT systems
are the most viable, flexible and scalable options.
• Cities, such as Rajkot, Surat, Ahmedabad, Hubli-
Dharwad, Amritsar, Indore, Bhopal, Vijayawada
and Bhubaneswar have implemented/are in
process of implementing BRT system as a cost-
effective public transit alternative
4.Why brt system in ahmedabad.......????
• Ahmedabad has a population of more than 6.3 million and an extended population of
7.2 million. It is the sixth largest city and seventh largest metropolitan area of India.
The bus rapid transport system was created to serve a growing population.
• In 2005, feasibility study reports were prepared by the state project development
agency, Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board, and later by CEPT University.
The study was headed by H. M. Shivanand Swamy; an economist, urban planner and
associate director of CEPT. The project was sanctioned by the Ministry of Urban
Development under JNNURM program in 2005
• Technical procedures were started in 2006. CEPT designed the system after detailed
analysis. Based on an analysis of the socio-economic factors, travel demand patterns,
road network characteristics, the metro plan and the existing Ahmedabad Municipal
Transport Service (AMTS) route network, a network of roads covering about 155
kilometres in length was identified for developing the BRTS.
5.Ahmedabad brts system (janmarg):-
• Janmarg, also known as Ahmedabad BRTS, is a bus rapid
transit system in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It is
operated by Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited, a subsidiary of
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and others. It is
designed by CEPT University. It was inaugurated in
October 2009.
• The system runs on Integrated Transportation
Management System (IMTS) which includes Advanced
Vehicle Tracking System (AVLS), Fleet Management
System (FMS), Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS),
Passenger Information System (PIS), Passenger
announcement (PA), and Vehicle Scheduling and
Dispatching (VSD). These technologies are provided by the
consortium of Vayam Technologies and GMV Innovating
Solutions since 2010. As a part of Intelligent Transit
Management System (ITMS), an app based and QR code
powered ticketing system was introduced in June 2017
6.About ahmedabad brts system:-

Owner:- AMC, AUDA, Government of Gujarat

Locale :- Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India
Transit type:- Bus rapid Transit
Number of stations:- 162 (Stations + cabins)
Headquarters:- Ground Floor, Dr. Ramanbhai Patel Bhavan,
West Zone Office, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation,
Usmanpura, Ahmedabad
Website:- http://www.ahmedabadbrts.org/
7.Operation of brts ahmedabad:-

• Began operation :- 14 October 2009

• Operator :- Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited
(AJL)
• Number of vehicles :-175 diesel buses
140Electric Buses.(250 AC buses)
• System length :- 125 kilometres (7.8 mi)
(with 89 kilometres (55 mi) dedicated
corridor).
8.AdvantageS of brts system in ahmedabad:-
• Grade separated provides high sense of safety and saves travel time.
• BRTS lanes do not interfere with mixed traffic.
• Designated curb side bus-only lanes improve BRT travel time making
buses competitive with automobile.
• Converted High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, allow buses to operate
faster, more reliably and more safely than buses in mixed traffic lanes.
• Mitigation / Adaptation. Ahmedabad is reaping benefits in the form of
faster and safer commuting, mitigation in impact of air pollution and
creating an overall positive impact on urban development.
• Social and environmental benefits.
9.Some drAwbacks are there .......

• Construction of graded lane has high capital value.

• Lanes with no interference may not be attainable always.
• Implementation of new bus lanes with street widening
may displace parking and pedestrian paths.
• Accidents due to brts buses increases day by day...
• Sometimes rash driving of buses by drives cause major
injury (Death) of the pedestrians or other road users.

• But , We can control the Accidents through Controlling

speed limits of brts buses.
Before at anjali....
10.Conclusion:-
• BRTS has proven itself to be successful and a sustainable mode of
transportation throughout the world.
• It is over the edge when compared to other modes of transportation, given
its high sense of safety through provision of separate lanes for the buses.
• The bus fare, quality of the buses, air conditioning adds up to its charm
thus making it popular among the masses.
• The total construction expenditure is also significantly lower when
compared to MRTS, since existing infrastructure is but to use.
• However, the implementation of BRTS has few challenges too, like, the
city must have adequate number of cross sections in order to provide
right of way to the buses, maintain the quality of mixed traffic lanes and
minimize noise levels and maintain air quality.
