what is gis ?
A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing,
storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earth's surface.
By relating seemingly unrelated data, GIS can help individuals and
organizations better understand spatial patterns and relationships
INPUT DATA FOR GIS
Input data for GIS cover all the aspects of capturing spatial
data and the attribute data.
The sources of spatial data are existing maps, aerial

What are Input Devices?
An input device is any hardware device that sends data to a computer, allowing you to
interact with and control it.
The most commonly used or primary input devices on a computer are the keyboard
and mouse.
The other input devices are Microphone, Digital Camera, Scanner, Touch Screen,
Barcode reader, Webcam, Biometric Devices etc.
Keyboard:
Keyboard is one of the primary input devices used to input data and commands.
It has function keys, control keys, arrow keys, keypad and the keyboard itself with the
letters, numbers and commands.
There are two types of Keyboard :
1. Wired Keyboard
2. Bluetooth Keyboard
A laptop keyboard is more compact than a desktop keyboard to make the laptop smaller
and lighter
Smartphones and tablets use on-screen keyboard to input messages and select
commands.
Mouse:
Mouse is an input device used to control the cursor and coordinates.
Types of Mouse:
1. Wired Mouse
2. Bluetooth Mouse
It allows the user to do Move the mouse cursor, Select, Scroll, Open or execute a
program ,Drag and Drop ,Hover.
A laptop uses a touchpad as the mouse
A smartphone and tablet use a touchscreen as primary input device and the user’s
finger is used as the mouse
Microphone:
Microphone is an input device that allows users to input audio into their computers.
Uses of Microphone are:
1. Audio for video
2. Computer gaming
3. Online chatting
4. Voice recorder
5. Voice recognition
6. Recording musical instruments
Scanner:
Scanner is an input device that reads an image and converts it into a digital file.
A scanner is connected to a computer through USB.
There are different types of scanners:
1. Flatbed scanner – uses a flat surface to scan documents
2. Sheetfed scanner – like a laser printer where paper is fed into the scanner
3. Handheld scanner – the scanner is dragged over the page to be scanned
4. Card scanner – for scanning business card
Touchscreen:
Touchscreen is an input device that allows users to interact with a computer using their
fingers.
It is used widely in laptop monitors, smartphones, tablets, cash registers and information
kiosks.
Most common functions of touchscreens are:
1. Tap
2. Double-tap
3. Touch and hold
4. Drag
5. Swipe
6. Pinch
OUTPUT DEVICES
Output devices are used to receive the information from the computer
either in softcopy or hard copy.
Output devices are as follows:
Data entry is the basic operation of encoding both types of data into the GIS
database formats. There are at least four basic procedures for inputting
spatial data into a GIS.
Manual digitizing;
Automatic scanning;
Entry of coordinates using coordinate geometry;
The conservation of existing digital data;
GIS Data are obtained from data capture, map digitizing, semi automatic
digitizing and automatic digitizing.
OUTPUTS - GIS
Maps: Everyone recognizes this most common output from a
GIS.
Cartograms: These special maps that distort geographic
features based on their output values rather than their size.
Charts: GIS can produce pie charts, histograms (bar charts),
line charts, and even pictures in addition to maps.
Directions: Another common output, directions show you
how to get from one place to another.
Customer lists: Business GIS applications often produce
customer lists, sometimes with printed mailing labels.
