HORSES

Wild and Domesticated

• Horses and humans have an ancient
relationship. Asian nomads probably
domesticated the first horses some 4,000 years
ago.
• While most horses are domestic, others remain
wild. Feral horses are the descendents of once-
tame animals that have run free for generations.
Groups of such horses can be found in many
places around the world.
• Horses and humans interact in a wide variety of sport
competitions and non-competitive recreational
pursuits, as well as in working activities such as
police work, agriculture, entertainment, and therapy.
• Humans provide domesticated horses with food,
water, and shelter, as well as attention from
specialists such as veterinarians and farriers.
• Many products are derived from horses, including
meat, milk, hide, hair, bone, and pharmaceuticals
extracted from the urine of pregnant mares.
