Falls in Construction
Falls in Construction
 Leading cause of deaths

 Falls from 4 to 6 feet can cause serious LTIs and

sometimes death.

 Most fatalities due to fall from scaffoldings, open

sided floors / flat forms and floor openings.

Falls in Construction
Introduction to working at
height
Working in any place
(above, at or below ground level)

where, if precautions are not taken

a person could fall and injure

themselves.
Compliance
What are the legislations for fall
protection ...?

Do we have any parliament Act ...?

What OHSAS is..

To Ensure Safety of Working at
Height ....

Follow Before, During and After steps

Identifying the hazards, associated risks and

deciding how best to protect workers is the first
step.
What kinds of Fall Protection
should use use?
Fall Protection can be divided in to two
categories

1. Fall Arrest
2. Fall Restraint
Fall Arrest and Restraint
Fall arrest - protects the
Fall arrest
worker who is already in the
process of falling by stopping
the fall after it has happened.

Fall restraint - preventing the

worker from accessing the
potential hazard.
CAZ

Common factors leading to fall
accidents…
• Inadequate PPEs RISK: .......?
• Unstable working platforms RISK: …….?
• Fragile work surfaces or openings not barricaded RISK: …….?
• Untrained workers RISK…….?
• Workers not trained in rescue of fall victims RISK: ………?
• Scaffolding not inspected before use RISK: ……….?
• Equipment inadequate or not maintained RISK: ……….?
• Fall arresters not arranged RISK……….?
• Below area not barricaded RISK…………?
• No warning displayed RISK…………?
• Proper access not arranged RISK……….?
• Poor supervision RISK…………?
• External Factors RISK…………?
Preventing the Risks of working at Heights
(Planning)
Planning is a very important part of working at heights. There are three
tools that enables to do

1 The Work Plan Review

(At the design stage, All stakeholders)

2 The Falls Prevention Plan

(to determine the hazards and controls involved in working at heights,
Audits)

3 The Risk Assessment

(must be completed by all contractors, must cover the hierarchy of fall
protection, must be approved by the PM or the person responsible for
health and safety)
