Azerbaijan during World War I

1914-1918
WWI two military blocs:
Antanta (Britain, France,
Russia) ENTENTE
Triple Alliance (Germany,
Italy, Austria-Hungary)
1915 Quadruple Alliance
(Triple + Ottoman Empire)

Aim: re-devising the world,

sources of row materials
and markets (Baku oil)
Russian authorities didn’t call
Azerbaijanis to the army and
established the military tax for
the male population. Only
representatives of the upper
class Azerbaijanis served for
the Russian army (more than
100 officers)

Reason: even if the

Azerbaijani Turks were called
to the army, they would have
never fought against the
Turkish army
The war influenced negatively to
industrial life of Azerbaijan
 in all industrial fields the
output of productions
decreased
 the implemented
mobilization and military
obligations damaged the
agriculture.
 there began new
uprisings against
national and religious
yoke in cities and
villages.
Sarikamish operation
 December 4, 1914 – January
18, 1915 – headed by Enver
Pasha.
 Result: Russian army
occupied Tebriz and managed
to oust the Turkish military
forces from South Azerbaijan.
 Reason: advantages in
manpower and technology
and mistakes made by the
Germans in operational
planning
