RIZAL’S SECOND TRIP ABROAD
• ON FEBRUARY 03, 1888, RIZAL TRAVELED TO HONG KONG DUE TO THREATS BY HIS
ENEMIES AND FRIARS. HE WAS FORCED TO LEAVE AFTER HIS SIX (6) MONTHS OF
STAY IN CALAMBA.

• ON FEBRUARY 08, 1888, HE ARRIVED IN HONG KONG AND STAYED AT VICTORIA


HOTEL. HE WAS THEN WELCOMED BY THE FILIPINO RESIDENTS THERE.

• DURING HIS STAY, A SPANIARD NAMED JOSE VARANDA WAS FOLLOWING HIM
AROUND. IT IS BELIEVED THAT HE WAS ORDERED TO SPY ON RIZAL’S MOVEMENTS.

• RIZAL WROTE A LETTER TO BLUMENTRITT ON FEBRUARY 16, 1888, IN WHICH HE


DESCRIBES HONG KONG AND HIS FEELINGS ABOUT THIS PLACE. ALSO, HE
EXPRESSES HIS BITTERNESS TO HIS ENEMIES.

• ON FEBRUARY 18, 1888, RIZAL AND BASA BOARDED ON THE FERRY STEAMER KIU-
KIANG WHICH IS GOING TO MACAU AND THEY STAYED AT DON JUAN FRANCISCO
LECAROS’ HOME.

• ON THE EVENING OF FEBRUARY 19, 1888, RIZAL WITNESSED A CATHOLIC
PROCESSION WHERE DEVOTEES ARE DRESSED IN BLUE AND PURPLE.

• ON FEBRUARY 20, 1888, RIZAL AND BASA RETURNED TO HONG KONG, BOARDED ON
THE SAME FERRY STEAMER KIU-KIANG.

• DURING RIZAL’S STAY IN HONG KONG, HE STUDIED CHINESE CULTURE AND


LIFESTYLE. HE ALSO WROTE HIS EXPERIENCES INCLUDING THE CELEBRATION OF
CHINESE NEW YEAR AND THE MARATHON LAURIAT PARTY.

• ON FEBRUARY 22, 1888, RIZAL LEFT HONG KONG AND BOARDED ON AN AMERICAN
STEAMER, OCEANIC, WHICH IS HEADING TO JAPAN.
• ON FEBRUARY 28, 1888, RIZAL ARRIVED AT YOKOHAMA AND HE REGISTERED AT THE
GRAND HOTEL.

• RIZAL THEN MOVED TO TOKYO AND STAYED AT TOKYO HOTEL FROM MARCH 2 TO
MARCH 7.

• ON HIS FIRST DAY IN TOKYO, RIZAL WAS EMBARRASED BECAUSE HE DO NOT KNOW
JAPANESE. THROUGH THIS, HE DECIDED TO STUDY THE LANGUAGE, ALONG WITH
DRAMA (KABUKI), ARTS, MUSIC, AND JUDO.

• DURING IN TOKYO, RIZAL WROTE TO PROFESSOR BLUMENTRITT THAT TOKYO IS


MORE EXPENSIVE THAN PARIS. ALSO, HE MENTIONED THAT THE STREETS IN
TOKYO ARE LARGE AND WIDE.

• DURING HIS STAY, HE WAS THEN VISITED BY JUAN PEREZ CABALLERO, A


SECRETARY OF THE SPANISH LEGISLATION AND INVITED HIM TO LIVE AT THE
SPANISH LEGISLATION.
