 Belikov: Teacher of Greek language at
school, forty years old bechelor.
 Varya: sister of a new school teacher
Kavalenkov.
 Kavalenkov: A new teacher of history at
the school.
How the Story moves ahead?

In the moonlight, two men, Burkin, the high

school teacher narrates a story of a
townsfolk, Belikov to his friend Ivan Ivanich,
the vertinary surgeon.
Setting

Time “night” at the “shed” belongs to

Prokofy, a village elder.
Style and Techniques
 Narrative “Frame tale "a tale within a tale, in which a person
relates his personal anecdote to an other character, like in
the story, Burkin narrates a story of weird man at school “
Belikov”
 Third person narration.
 Nocturnal landscape, happened at night like Burkin narrates
the life of Belikov at night in the moolight.
 Commentary on human life.
 Atmosphere is very calm.
 Binary opposition.
 Informal discussion about some subject.
 No unity of time place and action like Aristotle as this story
has no beginning , middle and end.
Who was the man?
 An alienated person and follower of his
philosophy, the only resident of his world
who does not allow anyone to enter his world
or to oppose his idea.
 He wears tight coat, galoshes, gloves

umbrella, even at night he used to sleep

under canopy.
 He has his shell/ capsule in which he used to

live like every person.

Introduction to the story
 The man who lived in shell is a story about the class
of a special group of people.
 These people always spend out their lives in shell of

their confinement and remains closed behind all

closed doors. Belikove is introvert and lives in his
own shell. His room was like a box and there was
canopy over his bedroom making it a perfect shell.
 When an other teacher joins the school with is sister

who was very jovial.

 There is discovery that Belikhov is bechelor and can

be married to Varya who wish for a change in his

life.
Continue
 But these were two banks of a stream that
can not meet or two opposite poles that can
not be reconciled.
 Varya and his brother were extrovert.
 It is due to the fact that Balikov is a man who

lived in a shell so he can’t step out to see the

light of reality like many of us.
 He can’t face the reality and true nature of

things.
Chekhov major concerns/ Themes
 Humanity must be free from tyranny and coercion, Belikhov
is a social tyrant a mean spirited individual who not only
maintains rigid control over himself but also suppresses the
impulse toward liberation in other.
 This story is insidious threat to human freedom and
fulfillment.
 Introvert vs. extrovert
 Self-restrainment.
 Change.
 Realism .
 Philosophical suicide to avoid sufferings.
 Socialable vs. unsocialable.
 Atavism : imitate or continue customs of earlier life.
Conclusion
 It is a thing of common sense that every one of us
has constructed walls around us, own philosophy and
theory and a self created world in which we dislike to
share with other, we don’t want change in life .
 We don’t want the suicide of our philosophy like
Belikov and result is sufferings.
 Every one of us living in a shell and does not want to
step out to see light.
 Chekhov presents before us a universal theme with
the life history of Belikov, we reject Kavalenkov and
Varya as we don’t want change in our lives as we are
living in our shells.
 But the question is there Belikhov is
production of the society, who is responsible
for the construction of such like fragmented
figures?
 Or, this is psychological case?
 Is Belikov is totally responsible for his action

as he has been given freedom of choice?

 Is there any reality in the this story?
 How can we apply this story in our lives?
All the best
