Introduction

 Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a

next-generation optical disc format.

 The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting

and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as
storing large amounts of data.

 The format offers more than five times the storage

capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a
single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.
History
 Blu-ray (BD) is a next-generation optical disc format.

 The first blue laser was developed in 1996 by Shuji

Nakamura (Nichia Corporation).

 In 2002, an alliance was formed, called the Blu-ray Disc

Association, including the likes of Sony, Samsung, Sharp,
Hewlett-Packard, and Royal Phillips.

 1st Blu-ray Disc recorder by Sony 3-3-03

 Robustness of disc

Life Span

 In the case of ordinary discs, the disc life is less.

 Blu ray recordable media is a combination of a layer of

silicon and copper which is bonded together during the
burning process, this alloy is much more resilient to the
hazardous conditions .

 In January 2004 was introduced a clear polymer coating

that gives Blu-ray Discs unprecedented scratch resistance.
Capacity

 A single-layer disc can hold up to 25 gigabytes of

information, while a dual-layer disc can hold up to 50
gigabytes of information.

 Future versions of Blu-ray discs may hold up to 200

gigabytes of Information.

 It is enough to put 2.5 hours of HDTV recording on it. It

also can record over 13 hours of standard TV broadcasting.
Content Protection
 Strongest content and copy protection schemes ever
developed.
 DRM (Digital Right Management)is the copyright
protection scheme the media industry uses to prevent
piracy.

Cost
 Long term Profitability model for content Providers.
 Cheapest Production cost.
Robustness

 Stronger resistance to scratches and fingerprints. The

protective layer is hard enough to prevent accidental
abrasions and allows fingerprints to be removed by
wiping the disc with a tissue.

Compatible
 The BD drives are designed to be backward compatible,
i.e. CDs and DVDs work equally well with the BD drives.
Structure of Dual Disc Layer
Red Laser vs. Blue Laser

Normal Red Laser as used on CDs and DVDs Blue-violet laser as used in Blu-ray technology
Wavelength: 650 nm Wavelength: 405nm

 In optical storage, data is written into many small pits under

the surface layer of the disk.

 The shorter wavelength of the blue-violet laser allows

smaller pits to be used.

 Smaller pits means more data can be stored.

Formats
It comes in four different formats:

 BD-ROM (read only): for reading recorded content.

 BD-R (recordable): for PC data storage.
 BD-RW (rewritable): for PC data storage.
 BD-RE (rewritable): for HDTV (high definition television)
recording.
Hard-coating technology

 In January 2004 was

introduced a clear polymer
coating that gives Blu-ray
Discs unprecedented
scratch resistance. The
coating was developed by
TDK Corporation and is
called "Durabis". It allows
BDs to be cleaned safely
with only a tissue.
Blu-ray Advantages

 Record high-definition television (HDTV) without any

quality loss.
 Instantly skip to any spot on the disc.
 Record one program while watching another on the disc.
 Edit or reorder programs recorded on the disc.
 Automatically search for an empty space on the disc.
Ongoing Develpoment
 SONY launched latest 200 GB Blu-ray disc.
 Quad-layer (100 GB) discs have been demonstrated on a drive with
modified optics and standard unaltered optics.
 In August 2006, TDK announced that they have created a working
experimental Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200 GB of data on a
single side, using six 33 GB data layers.
 JVC has developed a three-layer technology that allows putting both
standard-definition DVD data and HD data on a BD/(standard) DVD
combination.
Conclusion

 Both DVD and BD would most likely co-exist for quiet some
tie until HDTVs become more widespread.
 Further, with consumers clamoring for faster transfer
speeds and storage capacity it's possible that the industry
is headed to a point where BD sales will one day outstrip
DVDs.
