CHAPTER 15

MIXING AND CURING OF CONCRETE

By Group 7
Purpose
The purpose of this practicum is :
 To know the stages of the mixing and curing

concrete process.
 Also, to increase knowledge about the

properties of concrete-forming materials.

TOOLS
The following below are tools which we used in this
practicum:
 Cylinder Mold 15 cm x 30 cm;
 Cube Mold 15 cm x 15 cm x 15 cm;
 Shovel;
 Concrete Mixer;
 Rubber Hammer;
 Pan;
 Curing tub.
 Abram Cone;
 Oil;
 Compactor Stick.
MATERIALS
The following below are materials which we
used in this practicum:
 Coarse Aggregate;
 Fine Aggregate;
 Cement;
 Water.
PRACTICUM PROCEDURE
Separated to be 3 parts :
1. Mixing concrete
2. Compacting concrete
3. Curing concrete
MIXING CONCRETE

The following below are tha practicum procedures of

mixing concrete:
 Prepare all of the materials and the tools which used in

this practicum;
 Make sure coarse aggregate is moistened before placing

it into the concrete mixer by add a partial water;

 Turn on the concrete mixer and then add fine aggegate,

cement, and water in a rotating machine condition;

 Make sure all material are mixed already;
 Pull the lever and aimed to the pan so the mixture can

be taken;
COMPACTING CONCRETE
The following below are the practicum procedures of compacting
concrete:
 Coat the wall in molds with oil:

 Put 1/3 concrete mixture into molds;

 Compact using the compactor stick 25 times every 1/3 the

height of the mold, and then solidify;

 Repeat steps a and b with 2/3 height of the mold until it reach

full;
 Hit the side of the mold using a rubber hammer, so that the

concrete mix can be perfectly solid in the mold;

 Let the concrete mix for 24 hours so that the concrete mixture

can harden and become solid;

 Loosen the screw in the mold then remove the concrete mixture

that has become solid.

CURING CONCRETE
The following below are the practicum procedures of
curing concrete:
 Open the mold after leaving it for 24 hours after

mixing the concrete;

 Put the concrete that has been opened from the mold

into the curing tub contain water;

 Concrete must be curing wet at temperature

(23±1,7)°C starting from the time of mixing until the

time of testing;
 One day before the testing date, the sample object is

remove from the curing tube dried until it is ready to

be tested.
CONCLUSION
From this practicum we get a conclusion :
 The smaller the slump made, the more

material is needed, because seen from the

height of the albrams cone;
 More longer the concrete curing process

happen, will get more stronger concrete too;

 Concrete that does not got curing has a lower

strength, so curing is very important in

concrete.
ERROR FACTOR
Error factors obtained from this practicum are:
 Human Error, Inaccuracy in preparing

reports;
 Lack of understanding related to practical

procedures.
