SMART ENERGY

METER
ABSTRACT
Smart energy meters are essential to efficient energy consumption and
play a key part of the smart device infrastructure. Smart meters will help
consumers stay fully informed about their daily energy use and eliminate
wasteful routines or get rid of inefficient appliances, It will also help the
users to estimate their energy wastages for monthly and annual basis, this
will lead to lower energy wastage. For utility companies, the real-time
visibility into energy consumption process translates into accurate billing
data and the ability to balance demand against supply via flexible pricing
and other policies. With the IoT Platform, smart meters can be easily
implemented to support these and many other smart grid features.

OVERVIEW
We all know about Electricity energy meters which are installed in everyone’s
house or offices to measure the electricity consumption. At last of every month,
many of us get worried about the high electricity bill and we have to look at the
energy meter once in a while. But what if we can monitor our electricity uses from
anywhere in the world and get an SMS/E-mail when your energy consumption
reaches to a threshold value. Here we are building an IoT based Project of Energy
Meter.

In this project we make a Smart Electricity Energy meter using Arduino and
ESP8266 Wi-Fi module which can not only sends you a SMS/Email of your
electricity Bill but also you can monitor the energy uses anytime and from
anywhere in the world. Here we have used a Current Sensor ACS712 to measure
the energy consumption, we will discuss about it shortly.

We will take help of IFTTT platform to link our Wi-Fi to SMS/E-mail

notifications. We will also use MQTT Dashboard Android App to monitor our
Energy uses. So Lets Get started….

SINGLE PHASE ENERGY
METER
 Electronic Energy Meter is based on Digital Micro Technology (DMT) and
uses no moving parts. So the EEM is known as “Static Energy Meter” In EEM
the accurate functioning is controlled by a specially designed IC called ASIC
(Application Specified Integrated Circuit). ASIC is constructed only for
specific applications using Embedded System Technology. Similar ASIC are
now used in Washing Machines, Air Conditioners, Automobiles, Digital
Camera etc. In addition to ASIC, analogue circuits, Voltage transformer,
Current transformer etc are also present in EEM to “Sample” current and
voltage. The ‘Input Data’ (Voltage) is compared with a programmed “IoT
based Smart Energy Meter Data’ (Voltage) and finally a ‘Voltage Rate’ will be
given to the output. This output is then converted into ‘Digital Data’ by the AD
Converters (Analogue- Digital converter) present in the ASIC.
The Digital Data is then converted into an “Average Value”. Average Value /
Mean Value is the measuring unit of power. The output of ASIC is available as
“Pulses” indicated by the LED (Light Emitting Diode) placed on the front
panel of EEM. These pulses are equal to Average Kilo Watt Hour (kWh / unit).
Different ASIC with various kWh are used in different makes of EEMs. But
usually 800 to 3600 pulses / kWh generating ASIC s are used in EEMs. The
output of ASIC is sufficient to drive a Stepper Motor to give display through
the rotation of digits embossed wheels. The output pulses are indicated through
LED. The ASIC are manufactured by Analogue Device Company.
THEORY
Arduino Uno ESP8266 (wifi MODULE)
 It is a microcontroller board based on the

set firmware, meaning, you can simply hook
this up to your Arduino device and get about as
much WiFi-ability as a WiFi Shield offers The
ESP8266 module is an extremely cost effective
board with a huge, and ever growing,
community.
Opto-isolator IC FTDI Chip
 In electronics, an opto-isolator, also  The FTDI SmartBasic is a variation on
called an optocoupler, photocoupler, or our classic FTDI Basic which allows
optical isolator, is a component that you to connect a second device to the

signal. Commercially available opto-
isolators withstand input-to-output
voltages up to 10 kV and voltage
transients with speeds up to 25 kV/μs.
JUMPER WIRES
 A jump wire (also known as jumper wire,
or jumper) is an electrical wire, or group of
them in a cable, with a connector or pin at
each end (or sometimes without them –
simply "tinned"), which is normally used to
interconnect the components of a
breadboard or other prototype or test
circuit, internally or with other equipment
or components, without soldering.[1]
 Individual jump wires are fitted by
inserting their "end connectors" into the
slots provided in a breadboard, the
header connector of a circuit board, or a
piece of test equipment.
ORKING PROCEDURE
The smart energy meter contains a counter which counts the number of pulses in
the energy meter and feeds it to the arduino uno. The arduino uno uno will consist
of a preset program, the program is such that the data coming from the counter is
processed and fed to the iot sensor.

The entire working model is such that the energy meter measures the power
consumed by the bulb, the energy meter is caliberated with a counter which counts
the number of pulses in the energy meter, the number of pulses indicate the units of
energy consumed. For example an electronic meter might be of 2000 pulses
indicating 1 unit of energy is consumed. Now the number of pulses count is fed to
the arduino device which processes the data and sends it to the iot device which
will be caliberated to a cell phone where we will be able to see the energy
consumption readings.I this way wecan easily track our daily household energy
consumption.

RESULT
ADVANTAGES
Advantages to the consumers:

i) Can set the monthly electricity billing budget.

ii) No need to wait for the month end bill.
iii) They know exactly how much power is being utilized.
iv) Efficient use of energy.

Advantageous to the utility:

i) Less labor cost. There is no need of human operator to go to the

consumers address to take down the reading.
ii) Remote access of the meter reading.
iii) Optimum generation cost, raw material, losses and hence increase in revenue
LIMITATION
 System fails if no Internet coverage.

 Changes may be applicable for network use.

 Requires network availability.

CONCLUSION & Future Scope
 The smart energy meter gives the user an upper hand when it comes to
tracking the daily energy consumption and caliberating the energy meter to the
internet. As we know the amount of convenience assessed to the user by
internet. One can easily track the daily energy consumption and reduce the
amount of wastage of energy. Payment of electricity bill and receipt of the can
be done at tap of a thumb, no hassle of standing in long lines waiting for hours
to pay the bill. It can also be helpful in reducing energy theft.
 Prepaid billing system can be developed through which energy charges can be
directly from phone at any isntant.
 If a person fails to recharge his/her bills then power can be shut at that
particular site directly from the sub-station.
