INTRODUCTION

From October 31 to November 12, leaders from around the world have
gathered in Glasgow, Scotland, for COP26, during the international
Climate Summit talks.
COP stands for Conference of the Parties. It is a Climate Summit
organized by the United Nations, where countries meet with the aim of
taking measures against the climate crisis.
We are facing a situation of maximum urgency, where good ideas and
good intentions are not enough to fight the climate crisis.
The hope that we people of the planet have is that world leaders agree on
concrete plans to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year
2050.
In 2015, the Paris Agreement was adopted by more than 190 parties,
including the United States and China, and replaced the Kyoto Agreement.
WHAT IS COP26 AND WHAT IS ITS IMPORTANCE TO THE WORLD?

COP26 is an international conference of the United Nations (UN) that is

held every year in a different part of the world with the presidents or prime
ministers of the member countries.
The first version took place in 1995, in Berlin (Germany). In 2021 it takes
place in Glasgow, Scottish Lowlands, in the United Kingdom, and the
theme is the climate crisis and how to solve it from the international
community of the United Nations.
“Its importance lies in the fact that the climate crisis is perhaps the biggest
and most serious problem that afflicts all of humanity, since it affects some
countries and some populations more than others, since some countries,
regions, States and populations are more vulnerable than others ”.
In previous versions, the COP has had important achievements
such as:
1. Kyoto 1997: took an important first step in terms of defining
what should be the maximum limit of atmospheric emissions by
the States, and some of their commitments in terms of reducing
said emissions.
2. Cancun 2010: the idea of creating green funds appeared in
order to demand that the most industrialized and powerful
countries in the world help the most vulnerable states to overcome
the climate crisis.
3. Paris 2015: a late agreement was reached to define
commitments in terms of maximum atmospheric emissions, but
this commitment is voluntary, that is, if the States wish.
COP26 ends with an agreement, but falls short on climate action

While the Glasgow Climate Pact, agreed on November 13 at COP26,

reaffirms the global commitment to accelerate climate action this decade, it
left many wondering if this agreement is enough to limit global warming to
an increase. 1.5 ° C from pre-industrial levels.
"It is an important step, but insufficient," said the Secretary General of the
United Nations, António Guterres, in his assessment of the conference.
"Our fragile planet hangs by a thread. We continue to knock on the door of
climate catastrophe. It is time to enter emergency mode or our possibility of
reaching net zero emissions will be practically nil."
Here are some of the key achievements around
COP26:

Here are some of the key achievements around COP26

 Offer climate-friendly cooling

 The Cool Coalition, led by UNEP, announced a series
of measures to reduce the climate impact of the
refrigeration industry, including a boost of GBP 12
million (US $ 16.1 million) from the Government
from United Kingdom. UNEP research shows that
just 1.5 ° C of global warming, a temperature limit
that the world will now far exceed, could leave 2.3
billion people vulnerable to heat waves. Cooling will
be essential to protect human health and
productivity.
Reduction of methane emissions

 With the support of the European Union, UNEP

launched the International Methane Emissions
Observatory (IMEO) to drive action to reduce
emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas
responsible for at least a quarter of global warming
current. The IMEO will help oversee the
commitments made by governments in the Global
Methane Pledge, an effort by more than thirty
countries, led by the United States and the EU, to
reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030.
Asking for more ambition

 UNEP's 2021 Emissions Gap Report: The Heat Is

On, released ahead of COP26, showed that
under current NDCs the world is on track for a
global temperature rise of 2.7 ° C by the end of
the century. New and updated commitments,
introduced by 120 countries as of September 30,
2021, will only reduce projected emissions by
7.5% by 2030, while a 55% reduction is needed
to meet the 1.5 ° C targets. . Commitments to
achieving net zero emissions could help
eliminate another 0.5 ° C from 2.7 ° C.
Promote nature-based solutions

 Germany's Federal Ministry for the Environment announced

that it would provide an additional 10 million euros to the
Global EbA (Ecosystem-Based Adaptation) Fund, a pioneering
funding mechanism implemented by the International Union
for Conservation of Nature and UNEP to support solutions.
based on nature for adaptation to climate change.

 Despite the profitability of ecosystem-based adaptation as a

strategy for tackling climate change, only 5% of global climate
finance flows are spent on adaptation, although the United
Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called for
50% of total climate finance to be dedicated to adaptation.
End deforestation, protect peatland ecosystems

 More than 100 world leaders from countries that cover 85% of
the world's forests, pledged to end deforestation by 2030 and
allocate US $ 19.2 billion to that goal, while more than 30
finance companies pledged to end investments in activities
related to deforestation.

 Another vital carbon store, peatlands, was the center of

increased cooperation between countries with large areas of
this ecosystem. The launch of the first global reference map of
peatlands was also announced and several countries, including
Germany and England, committed to publishing comprehensive
strategies for the conservation of peatlands.
