Venn Diagram

 Introduction
 Venn, a British mathematician, developed

what are called Venn diagrams mainly to

illustrate the principles of Set Theory and
certain operations on sets. This type of
diagram is extensively used in scientific and
engineering presentations, in theoretical
Mathematics, in Computer applications and in
Statistics.
Question 1 to 5

Study the diagram given below and answer

each of the following questions.
1. How many persons who take tea and wine but not
coffee?
a) 20 b) 17 c) 25 d) 15

2. How many persons are there who take both tea

and coffee but not wine?
a) 22 b) 17 c) 7 d) 20

3. How many persons take wine?
a) 100 b) 82 c) 92 d) 122
4. How many persons are there who takes only
coffee?
a) 90 b) 45 c) 25 d) 20

5. How many persons take all the three?
a) 20 b) 17 c) 25 d) 15
Question 6.
How many numbers are there between 1 and
100 that are not divisible by 2, 3 and 5?
a) 24 b) 20 c) 45 d) 15
We can solve this question by drawing a Venn diagram.
From the above diagram it is clear that (27+14+7+7+13+3+3 =
76 ) 76 numbers are divisible by either 2,3 or 5.
So 100 - 76 = 24 numbers are not divisible by 2,3 or 5.
Question 7.
In a class,7 students like to play Basketball
and 8 like to play Cricket. 3 students like to
play on both Basketball and Cricket. How
many students like to play Basketball or
Cricket or both?
a) 15 b) 12 c) 20 d) 30
Answer: b
B + C - BC = Number of students that play
either Basketball or Cricket
7 +8 - 3 = 12
Question 8
In a survey, it was found that 65% of the people
would watch news on TV, 40% read
newspaper, 25% read newspaper and watched
TV. What percentage of people neither
watched TV nor read newspaper?
(a) 0% (b) 5% (c) 10% (d) 20%
Ans: [d]
80% of the people either watched TV or read
newspaper or both
Question 9
In a class consisting of 100 students, 20 know
English and 20 do not know Hindi and 10
know neither English nor Hindi. The number
of students knowing both Hindi and English
is
(a) 5 (b) 10 (c) 15 (d) 20
Solution
Ans: [b]
Question 10
Out of forty students, 14 are taking English
Composition and 29 are taking Chemistry.
 If five students are in both classes, how

many students are in neither class?

 How many are in either class?
 What is the probability that a randomly-

chosen student from this group is taking

only the Chemistry class?
Question 11
In a survey of 500 students of a college, it
was found that 49% liked watching football,
53% liked watching hockey and 62% liked
watching basketball. Also, 27% liked
watching football and hockey both, 29%
liked watching basketball and hockey both
and 28% liked watching football and basket
ball both. 5% liked watching none of these
games.
 How many students like watching all the

three games?
 Find the ratio of number of students who like
watching only football to those who like
watching only hockey.
 Find the number of students who like

watching only one of the three given games.

 Find the number of students who like

watching at least two of the given games.

Question 12
100 students were interviewed
28 took PE, 31 took BIO, 42 took ENG, 9
took PE and BIO, 10 took PE and ENG, 6
took BIO and ENG, 4 took all three subjects.

a) How many students took none of the

three subjects?
b) How many students took PE but not BIO
or ENG?
c) How many students took BIO and PE but
not ENG?
