EXAMPLE 1

An office has length of 20m, width=10m, height=3m.

1.) Ceiling to desk height is 2m.
2.) Area to be illuminated to a general I 250 lux using twin lamp 32 watt CFL
Luminaire with SHR of 1.25.
3.) Each Lamp has an initial output of 85 lumen per watt.
4.) Maintenance factor is 0.63, Utilization factor is 0.69

Design a lighting system for this office.

Solution
Step 1 (Find required lux level)
Lux level required is 250 lux

Step 2 (Select luminaire)

Luminaire is given in equation, (CFL luminaire) and their total watt
rating is given by;
Total wattage of Luminaire = 2 x 32
=64
Step3 (Determine Room Index of UF)
Hm = Vertical distance between working plane
  RI = 3.33

Utilization factor = 0.69

Step 4 (Number of luminous)

  N

Where F = Lumen flux from each lamp

F= lumen effeciency x each fixtures
F = 85 x 64

  N
N = 21 Luminaires
Step 5 (Determine Minimum spacing between luminaire)
Minimum Spacing = (SHR)(Hm)
Hm = Mounting Height
SHR = Space Height Ratio

Minimum Spacing = (1.5)(2)

Minimum spacing between luminaries = 2.25

Step 6 (Determine number of required rows of luminaire

along width of the room)

Number of Required rows = Width of the room/ Minimum Spacing

Number of Required rows = 10/2.25

≈ 4 row
Step 7 (Number of luminaire in each row )
Number of luminaire in each row = Total luminaire/ Number of rows

Number of luminaire in each row = 21/4

≈5
Step 8 (Axial spacing along luminaire)
Axial Spacing = Length of the room/ Number of luminaire in each row
Axial Spacing = 20/5
=4
Step 9 Transverse spacing between luminaire
Transverse spacing = Width of the room/ Number of luminaire in each row

Transverse spacing = 10/4

= 2.5
