ZARZUELA

• a uniquely Spanish genre which combines song with recitation, action and a
humorous tone to create a dynamic spectacle. The latter incorporating
operatic and popular song, as well as dance.

• The name of this dance is derived from the name of a Royal hunting lodge
called the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid

• two main forms of zarzuela: 


Baroque zarzuela- Early zarzuela (1630-1750)
Romantic zarzuela- Late zarzuela (1850-1950)

• El Laurel de Apolo traditionally symbolises the birth of a new musical genre which
had become known as La Zarzuela

• Zarzuela can be further divided into two.


Main subgenres : género grande and género chico (is a Spanish genre of short, light plays with
music)

• First known composer of zarzuelas was Juan Hidalgo.

• Calderón - the greatest playwright of the day.

• Hidalgo - the best Spanish composer.
