THE WARRIOR ETHOS DEFINED
Warrior - a person engaged or experienced in warfare.

Ethos - defined as the disposition, character, or
fundamental values peculiar to a specific person,
people, culture, or movement.

Warrior Ethos
 It is the professional attitude and beliefs that inspires
every soldier to fulfill his obligations, regardless of the
challenges. It is the foundation for the soldiers total
commitment to victory, weather in peace or at war.

Warrior Ethos
 Fuels the fire to fight through the worst of conditions to
victory no matter how long it takes, no matter how much
effort is required.
 It sustains the will to win when the situation looks
hopeless and doesn’t show any indications of getting
better.
 Warrior Ethos is a culture. It is taught and modeled for
the youth by fathers and older brothers, by mentors and
elders.

Two Types of Cultures
1. Guilt-Based Culture
 Individuals in a guilt-based culture internalize their society’s
conceptions of right and wrong.
 The sinner feels his crime in his guts.
 He doesn’t need anyone to convict him and sentence him; he
convicts and sentences himself
2. Shame-Based Culture
 In a shame-based culture, “face” is everything.
 All that matters is what the community believes of us.

Patriotism
 Foremost among the values of a Filipino soldier is his unwavering
love for his country. It is for the country that a soldier willingly
commits to a life of service.
 This is the highest value that the Filipino soldier possesses.
 It is the energy that drives the soldier as the defender of national
sovereignty. He stands by his oath of service with a stout heart,
knowing that even if he is ultimately left standing alone or when
dying in the battlefield, he rests content with the thought that his
reason for existence has been fulfilled.

CAPTAIN ARTURO B ORTIZ 0-9713

"For acts of conspicuous courage, gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above beyond the call of duty during a fierce firefight with about 200
numerically superior rebels at Sitio Manipolun, Pandaran, Murcia, Negros Occidental on 6 April 1990, while serving as Commander of five joint
teams of the 606th Special Forces Company, Philippine Army and elements of the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Units.
Upon receiving information on the presence of a large communist terrorist camp in the hinterland of Murcia, CAPT ORTIZ initiated and planned a
raid mission on the place. Under cover of darkness, he led his troops in a grueling 11-hour cross-country foot march and dangerously scaled a
1,000 foot steep cliff to infiltrate enemy territory. Faced with a formidable rebel force, outnumbering his troops by 4:1 ratio and compounded by a
grim prospect that an enemy counterattack would force his troops to back off through the same fatally dangerous cliff where air or artillery fire
support and troops in creeping to as close as 10 meters from the enemy, cautiously avoiding booby traps and claymore mines.
As he launched the surprise attack, the stunned rebels scampered for cover and fought back from their bunkers, behind tree trunks and felled
trees, but he systematically orchestrated the momentum of the attack by sustained, accurate and controlled fires and maneuver. Disregarding
personal safety, he darted from one team to another, encouraging his troops, directing their lines of fire and instructing them to spare the women
and children huddled under a tree and instructed them to lie prone to avoid being hit. Leading his men in hot pursuit against the scampering
rebels, the troops overwhelmed the enemy and completely overran the 28-hut NPA training camp.
The 2-hour gun battle resulted in 84 terrorist killed with 22 dead bodies counted, including 17 recovered on site, 8 captured, several others
wounded, and 105 missing, as reported by the Negros Regional Party Committee monitored thru Negros Island command's Radio Monitoring
System. Only one was wounded on the government side. Recovered from the enemy were 33 assorted firearms, 7 hand grenades 20 rifle
grenades, 5 ICOM radios, 8 claymore mines, 30 electric blasting caps, explosives thousands of ammunition, surgical and medical equipment,
voluminous documents, P 70,000.00 cash money and others. By the deploy of exceptional courage and a high degree of leadership. CAPTAIN
ORTIZ distinguished himself in the field of combat in keeping with the highest tradition of the Armed Forces of the Philippines."

Never Accept Defeat
FIRST LIEUTENANT HILARIO A ESTRELLA O-8007
PHILIPPINE ARMY
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity beyond the call of duty during a pre-dawn raid by about 200 heavily armed terrorists
on Bubuan Detachment at the vicinity of Barangay Bubuan, Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur, on 1 December 1984, while serving
as Detachment Commander of “C” Company, 33rd Infantry Battalion, 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division PA. The enemy launched
a surprise attack by unleashing heavy volume of fires from high powered guns and grenade launchers into the two separate
positions of the troopers. Immediately all the elements of the 32-man detachment took positions and engaged the raiders in a
fierce gun battle. First Lieutenant Estrella, after assessing the situation, instructed his men to conserve ammunition and
ordered them to hold their grounds at all costs. Amidst hail of bullets and explosions of grenades battering their positions, he
moved from one place to another, with blood oozing from his wounds, shouting orders and encouraging his men to carry on
the fight. When their M60 machine gun malfunctioned, he put it into operation, manned it himself and engaged the enemy.
Having ten of his men already killed and several others wounded, he stood his ground. The attackers subjected the troopers
to all kinds of offensive tactics and taunted them to surrender. Unfazed, First Lieutenant Estrella rallied his men and the
fierce fire-fight lasted seven hours until the terrorists withdrew. At the scene of the encounter, they recovered 22 bodies of
dead terrorists, including 3 commanders, 12 high-powered firearms, assorted ammunition and subversive documents. By this
exceptional gallantry, First Lieutenant Estrella distinguished himself in combat, in keeping with the finest tradition of Filipino
soldiery."

Never Quit
CAPTAIN CIRILITO E SOBEJANA O-9786 PA
Isabela, Basilan - 13 January 1995
After two hours of continuous fire fight, CAPTAIN SOBEJANA was hit in the lower arm as he
went for the radio of a fallen soldier. Bravely holding his ground, he sustained a second bullet
wound that almost severed his right arm. Still, he controlled all fire directions to best defend
their position and repulse the encircling enemy. Though in pain and with a shattered rifle after
it was hit by an enemy fire, he never lost composure and continued leading his men. He even
maneuvered around, exposing himself to enemy fire to direct the encounter. After almost four
hours of intense fighting, reinforcements from the Task Group Panther and the 4th Scout
Ranger Company arrived to secure the area and evacuate the wounded. Report placed the
enemy casualties at 30 killed and unconfirmed number of wounded.
By this gallantry, CAPTAIN SOBEJANA distinguished himself in combat, in keeping with the
finest traditions of the Filipino soldiery."[24]

Never Leave a Fallen Comrade
Sandoval's men began clearing the building from top to bottom. After clearing the fifth to the
second storeys, they were about to enter the ground level when a burst of gunfire wounded
Corporal Jayson Mante. His two other companions managed to quickly withdraw to the safety of
the building's second storey, but Mante's injury prevented his own escape. Several failed attempts
to rescue Mante transpired, during which time he was wounded several more times. At this point,
Sandoval himself found an alternate route by which to approach and rescue Mante. He ordered his
men to provide suppressive fire while he and another soldier, Private First Class Sherwin Canapi,
attempted the rescue. As he reached the wounded soldier, Sandoval checked the latter's pulse and
tried to pull him to safety. Sandoval was first wounded in his side. He returned fire but was then
shot in the neck and finally in the cheek, which proved fatal. He managed to crawl on top of Mante,
shielding him from enemy fire. His body was later found to have bullets lodged in the chest, proving
that he had protected Mante from getting further hit.

WARRIOR CULTURE
 The Warrior Ethos embodies certain virtues—courage, honor, loyalty, integrity,
selflessness and others—that most warrior societies believe must be inculcated
from birth. In Sparta, every newborn boy was brought before the magistrates
to be examined for physical hardiness. If a child was judged unfit, he was taken
to a wild gorge on Mount Taygetos, the mountain overlooking the city, and left
for the wolves.
 Courage is inseparable from love and leads to what may arguably be the
noblest of all warrior virtues: selflessness.
 The Warrior Ethos is not, at bottom, a manifestation only of male aggression or
of the masculine will to dominance. Its foundation is society-wide. It rests on
the will and resolve of mothers and wives and daughters—and, in no few
instances, of female warriors as well—to defend their children, their home soil
and the values of their culture.

WARRIOR CULTURE
 All warrior cultures train their youths in warrior ethos. They make
the young men on the passage to warriorhood dress alike, eat
and sleep alike, speak alike, wear their hair alike, suffer alike and
achieve victory alike.
 Warrior cultures employ honor, along with shame, to produce

courage and resolve in the hearts of their young men.
 Many warrior cultures have arisen in harsh physical

environments.

ENEMY WITHIN US
 At a deeper level, the Warrior Ethos recognizes that each of

us, as well, has enemies inside himself. Vices and
weaknesses like envy and greed, laziness, selfishness, the
capacity to lie, cheat, steal and do harm to our brothers.
 The tenets of the Warrior Ethos, directed inward, inspire us to
contend against and defeat those enemies within our own
hearts.

SOLDIER’S PRAYER
