China was beset by political and cultural turmoil. During such periods of social upheaval
the purposes of education deal with either preserving or changing the culture.
LEGALISM-associated with the scholar Shih Huang Ti, became imperial China’s
official philosophy.

maintain order. For the Legalist, the purpose of education was to impose their definition of
Chinese culture through indoctrination.
TAOISM- associated with Lao Tzu. Unlike the Legalist who wanted to control others,
Lao Tzu advised people to stop trying to control other people and events, go with the
steam of life, and live simply and spontaneously.
- In TAOISM education purpose is to encourage the self reflection needed to
find one’s true self and become free of the control of others.
