 In some Universities , the word thesis is used
as a part of a bachelor’s or master’s course,
while dissertation is normally applied to a
doctorate, in others, the reverse is true.

Dissertation writing simply means students
are required :
 To select a topic of interest,
 Make a Research plan,
 Gather the required Data,
 Analyze the Findings and
 Finally come up with a conclusion along with
their recommendations.
1. The project report is a scientific document and
requires the highest attention to detail.
2. Whatever the nature of your project, the effort
you have put in is original and therefore a report
of your work should also be an original
document.
3. The entire report should be written by you in
your own words.
4. You must provide suitable references to every
source of information(book, the web, journal
paper, Ph. D thesis etc.) utilized in your work.
5. Mention all relevant references no matter how
similar or dissimilar to your work.
6. No cutting and pasting: Information from any kind of
source must be described in your own words in the thesis.
7. Figures from the internet or e-resources can be used with
references only if they are difficult to reproduce. Modified
pictures must be referenced as “adapted from …”
8. Beware! The project evaluator can easily spot a cut and
paste job.
9. Do not ‘lift’ sections from a thesis! It is a crime!
10. Maintain a written record of references with a short
description of salient features in your own words from day
1 of your project. This will help you write an original
report free from plagiarism.
11. To write a good report it is important to be able to speak
and write good English. Work on this: read books, watch
TV, movies etc.
 Introduction (introduce the reader to the research
topics; explain the importance & requirements of your
research)
 Literature review (show what has already been written
on the chosen topic)
 Explain the research design (methodology should
cover the steps you have taken to conduct a research)
 Present the findings (what did your research show?
What are the key findings?)
 Discussion on the findings (what do the findings mean?
What is the contribution of your research to the
existing literature?)
 Conclusions (present the limitations of your study and
give recommendations on further research)

1) Cover/title page
This may vary according to the formatting style
and institution requirements, but will usually contain
the researcher’s name and course, the thesis title, the
advisor’s name and the wording stating with what
intention the paper is submitted.
2) Acknowledgements
This is a page of gratitude to those who have helped
the writer in his or her research endeavours. Although it
may optionally list your family members, it must
necessarily name those who have made a contribution
to your study.
3)Table of contents
Here you will have to provide a list of thesis sections
and subsections with the corresponding page numbers.
4) Abstract/ Executive summary
It is a brief (usually no more than 500 words) summary of
your research objective and summary. It is necessary in
order to quickly determine what your thesis is all about.
5) Introduction
Here any thesis format requires you to provide the
rationale for your investigation, state its importance for the
research field, give its objective and explain your research
problem in detail based on the background information.
6) Review of Literature
Survey of literature has to highlight those suggestions and
findings from existing literature which set the scene for your
research problem. Refrain from summarizing all sources you
have read. Instead, you should provide only the information
which is relevant for your topic.
7) Research Methodology
This chapter needs to explain the methods which
will be used to conduct the research.
The basic three approaches are qualitative,
quantitative and mixed. However, there are also
numerous research methods and tools to go along.
8)Theory
In this part you will need to declare your starting
ideas on the subject and provide substantial proof
for them. In addition, the research proceedings and
your computations should also be present.
9) Data Collection :
10) Analysis & Interpretation
11) Findings, Results and Discussions
Remember to mention under which conditions
your results were obtained. The results and
discussion sections are often combined because
this way you can explain how the findings
contribute to the existing knowledge base and
analyze whether they go in line with old theories
or give new insights.
Use of diagrams and graphs is necessary for this
section.
12) Suggestions &Recommendations:
13)Conclusions
Your conclusion has to summarize your research
results and suggest avenues for further investigation.
14)Bibliography
The references page has to be formatted according to
the required style (iim, iit, Harvard, etc.) and needs to
include both online and print sources.
15)Appendices
Generally, this section of a thesis format will contain
the illustrative material for your thesis or some
research material which would not fit into the main
body.
