Short Answers
Question Tags
• Question tags are short questions added to
the end of a statement to ask for
confirmation of, or agreement with, the
statement.
• They take the same auxiliary verb as in the
statement.
• A positive statement is followed by a
negative tag, and a negative statement is
followed by a positive tag.
Study the following question tags:
“aren’t I?” I’m older than you,
“I am” aren’t I?

“didn’t I?” He used to go to


“I used school with you,

“will you/won’t you?” Phone me later, will

“can you/could you?” you?/can you?
“shall we?” Let’s go home now,

• NB! Note that everyone/someone/ anyone/no one form their
question tags with an auxiliary verb + they.

We use non-negative tags after never, no, nobody, hardly, scarcely, little.
It’s hardly rained all summer, has it?

• NB! So and not can be used in short answers after:
think, hope, expect, suppose, I’m afraid, guess, it
seems, say, believe or imagine.

Echo tags
• Echo tags are response to an affirmative or negative
sentences. They are used to ask for more
information or to show anger, concern, confirmation,
interest, surprise.
He quit his job. – He did? (surprise)
He hasn’t called. – He hasn’t? (surprise)
He quit the job. – He did, didn’t he? (confirmation)
I’ll be punished, will I? (we don’t expect the answer)
