MEAL PLANNING

MEAL PLANNING
- a science which deals with the
preparation of food to meet the
nutritional and aesthetic need of a
group or family.
MEAL – is the food that we take. It is also
refers to the customary time of eating
well/food.
MENU – is a written meal plan for a given
period of time.
MEAL PATTERN – the format or sequence
of serving or eating a meal, may consist of
one or several courses.
COURSES – includes all the food that is
served at the same time within a meal.
example:
- meat with vegetables
- dessert
DIFFERENT MEALS OF THE DAY

1. BREAKFAST – is usually served in the


morning. The first meal during day.
2. BRUNCH – is a combine breakfast and
lunch.
3. LUNCH – is served midday afternoon
consisting of food light and bulk in content.
Served during 11:30am – 12:30pm.
4. SUPPER – is a light meal served late in the
afternoon.
5. DINNER – is a heavy meal, served midday
in the evening .

bigger the family, the bigger is
the budget and the more
variety of foods is required to
be prepared.

- babies, children,
teenagers and old people
require different foods and
different preparation.
3. ACTIVITY LEVEL OF FAMILY
MEMBERS
- the amount of physical
activity of each of the family
members influences their food
requirement. Active people,
especially those who engage
in sports.
4. FOOD PREFERENCES
- children have different
food preferences from
adults/always prepare food
that will be liked by
everybody and not a one
person’s preferences.
5. TIME
- busy people and working
mothers have very little time to
prepare food for the family. Plan
simple meals and prepare or used
convenience food if necessary,
convenience foods may be
precooked, canned, or frozen.
6. SPECIAL DIET
- diabetic or sick people
require special diets.
Vegetarians do not eat meat.
Infants have special diets too.
Old people require soft foods.
7. FOOD BUDGET
- If your budget is limited,
use less expensive foods,
always remember to include
rich in carbohydrates,
proteins, and also vitamins
and minerals in planning tour
meals.
